For a high quality, target grade 9mm handgun, 50 yards is about the maximum effective accuracy. Your average over the counter 9mm handgun will deliver effective accuracy at this range, but your best accuracy will be found between 25 and 35 yards.

The effective range of the 9mm round is about 50 yards, the maximum range you can acheive any accuracy with this gun will be around 100 yards.
Most shooters are rarely effective with a handgun past 25 yards. If you are using the gun for self defense, I would not bother shooting practicing beyond 25 yards as the need to engage a target at that range would be a very highly unlikely scenario.
Most self defense shootings take place inside of 21 feet and many even much closer than that.
Of course, accuracy at distance will be determined by the type of ammo and field conditions as well.

I'll assume you know since you specified the pistol in your details, but the full answer to your question would depend on barrel length, supporter or unsupported stance/attachments as well as the particular round (i.e. bullet weight, projectile shape and propellent.) The ballistic charactersistics of the average 9mm parrebelum would allow you to accurately hit a man sized object from several hundred yards if in a properly equiped weapon. Competiion ranged pistols shooters preform amzing groupings at 100 yards with a scoped/supported pistol. But I digress..I have a standard Italy made berratta 92fs, which for all intents and purposes is a m9. Mine happens to have a muzzle brake but that doesn't mean anything for single shot accuracy, it just helps with rapid fire. The only question then is what you mean by accurate. I can consistently get a 2 foot grouping at 100 yards unsupported, two handed. Out of a 10 round mag two thirds of those shots I can put in a 1 foot group. Of course at that distance I won't be making lethal weapon happy faces. Of course I couldn't do that at fifty or even twenty five yards either. I could draw you a picture at ten yards though with my 92. If you wanted to consitently put a bullet through the same hole, you probably couldnt go past ten yards (possibly 7 depending on your gun). If you wanted to consitently get a bullseye your thinking probably twenty five. If you want to be able to hit a man sized target the first time everytime your probably thinking fifty. If you can afford to miss a shot or two and want to hit a man sized target you could probably get up to a hundred to hundred and fifty pretty easily. at two hundred yards you would probably have to empty the magazine to gaurentee a hit (and would have to be skilled). Past that with that pistol it would be more of an issue of dumb luck..the barrel is a bit too short but more importantly your sight picture becomes inefective. (and remember also that what your gun is able to do and what you or someone else may able to accurately due with it are two different things) If you check out several famous pistol exhibitionists you will see things done with pistols you thought physically impossible, but those are guys that burn 700,000 rounds per year.

The US Army's furthest target distance for qualification for a 9mm is 50 meters. I does take practice to get proficient at firing at that range. If you are just starting to shoot try 25yrd to start.

I agree. After 30-40 feet you'll miss a person using a 4 inch barrel and not likely to penetrate a soup can after 100 feet.

20 yards (60 feet) is plenty far enough to make it difficult for most folks. At most matches, you'll shoot at about 21 ft..
