Good point...early Christian church leaders lived in poverty...even Jesus!
Matthew 8:20
And Jesus saith unto him, The foxes have holes, and the birds of the air have nests; but the Son of man hath not where to lay his head.
Material wealth is not the most important thing when you look at the eternal side of things. In fact, if you let money become your God, it can lead to your downfall. Jesus knew this, and he asked His followers to forsake their wealth to follow Him.
Matthew 19:16-24
16 And, behold, one came and said unto him, Good Master, what good thing shall I do, that I may have eternal life?
17 And he said unto him, Why callest thou me good? there is none good but one, that is, God: but if thou wilt enter into life, keep the commandments.
18 He saith unto him, Which? Jesus said, Thou shalt do no murder, Thou shalt not commit adultery, Thou shalt not steal, Thou shalt not bear false witness,
19 Honour thy father and thy mother: and, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself.
20 The young man saith unto him, All these things have I kept from my youth up: what lack I yet?
21 Jesus said unto him, If thou wilt be perfect, go and sell that thou hast, and give to the poor, and thou shalt have treasure in heaven: and come and follow me.
22 But when the young man heard that saying, he went away sorrowful: for he had great possessions.
23 Then said Jesus unto his disciples, Verily I say unto you, That a rich man shall hardly enter into the kingdom of heaven.
24 And again I say unto you, It is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle, than for a rich man to enter into the kingdom of God.
Jesus knew how hard it would be for one to forsake their riches in order to be a Christian. Money can lead to greed, and that is not a pleasent characteristic. Now, God does not condemn wealth. You won't go to hell simply because you have a lot of money. It's what you do with your money that counts. If you love your wealth so much that you put it above God and are not willing to use it for God's purpose, as the rich man in the story was, that's when it becomes a sin.
The early Christian leaders gave their money to the poor, and they were always travelling, being missionaries. They used their money for godly purposes, and that is why they were poor. They knew that monetary wealth is fleeting on this earth, so they waited for the rich reward that awaits them and all of God's followers in heaven.
Don't judge others because they are rich, and as far as rich church leaders go, only God knows their hearts. Just worry about your own attitude toward your money, and whether or not it is keeping you out of heaven.
God bless!

They were always moving around preaching the gospel there was no need for them to accumulate wealth. where ever they go they were provided for there was always someone who took them in. There is nothing wrong with wealth because you can do a lot to help others and God wants you to prosper in every aspect of your life. I am sure you would not listen to me if i come to you telling you how great my god is and that he is a provider and i am looking busted and broken down. He gives us the power to create wealth To whom much is given much is required so that his name can be glorified and honored.

They didn't live in wealth because Christ asked them to leave it behind and trust in him to take care of them. Christ and his deciples had money that they actually worked for while on their journey in life but they had only enough to take care of their needs. the bible does say that the meek and the poor shall inherit the Kingdom of God.
