Here is an excellent explanation of hibernation.

—What is the Hibernation in Windows 2000/XP/2003?

When a computer enters hibernation, a snapshot of all computer settings and memory contents of a computer is taken, the information is saved to the local hard disk, and then the computer is turned off. When you restart the computer, all the settings and memory contents are restored to their original state. Unlike the standby state, the computer does not require power to maintain itself when it enters hibernation. All documents and programs are restored to their original state when the computer comes out of hibernation. This article describes how to configure a Windows 2000- compatible computer that supports Advanced Configuration and Power Interface (ACPI) to enter hibernation.

hibernation takes all your open programs, memory settings and preferences - it writes them all to a single hibernation file.

When you hibernate that file sits waiting for you to wake up the pc. it then loads that file.
it saves you time loading windows all the time from scratch.

To hibernate, you have to enable hibernation first:
control panel\display\screen saver\power\hibernation\
put the check mark in to enable hibernation.

when you press the power button for 2 seconds, the system will say preparing to hibernate. Then it will shut down.
To wake from hibernation, press the power button for 2 seconds and wait for it to load.
