In India we go to medical school after high school. Medical school consists of four and a half years of study followed by one year or rotating internship. At the end of this we get the MBBS degree (Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery). If we decide to specialize, we enter a residency program ranging from 3 years to 5 years. If the residency is in a non-surgical branch we emerge with an MD (Doctor of Medicine).
In the US, medical school admission requires graduation from college. The duration of medical school is 4 years and upon graduation one becomes an MD (Doctor of Medicine). One then applies for residencies in the branch of preference.
The WHO considers the MBBS to be equivalent to the US MD.
