They don't. They just strengthen the core or the abdominals. If u want to lose weight u can either do lots of cardio work or u can perform circuit workouts. From my perspective circuit workouts are great to lose weight. An example of a circuit workout would be:
Push ups for a minute or 30 sec.
Crunches for a minute or 30 sec
Chair or bench dips for a minute or 30 sec.
Shoulder presses for a minute or 30 sec.
Jumping jacks for 3:00 minutes
Dumbbell curls for a minute or 30sec
Crunches for a minute or 30 sec
Squats with or without dumbbells for a minute or 30 sec.
Lunges for a minute or 30 sec
Calf raises for a minute or 30 sec
Jog in place for 3 minutes
Rest for 2 minutes and perform all those exercises one more time. There's no rest in between the exercises
Remember that in order to develop a nice stomach or to get a six pack crunches must be done slowly. Sit ups are not very good for the stomach because they work your lower back. U should also perform different kind of abdominal exercises like crunches, reverse crunches, planks, flutter kicks, leg levers, etc. Doing sit ups won't get u anywhere. Sprints and running are great ways of losing weight.

Simply, no...but
If you are looking to spot-weight loss, it doesn't work that way. Usually, how you put the weight on is how it comes off, often in reverse. Genetics control where a man or a woman tend to store excess fat, and family history does too.
However, spot "reduction" is another thing. If you are looking to minimize the appearance of your abdomen, then sit-ups & crunches can help. The more toned your abdominal muscles, the better able they are to support the excess fat stored there--minimizing the *appearance* of the fat. Also, exercize will help in overall body conditioning, which can lead to weight loss. if that is a difficult area for you, the toning will give the most obvious results.
One note--belly fat, also known as visceral fat, is the most unhealthy fat to have stored on the body. Cutting a few calories and doing some general exercizing will go a long way in improving your health--which in turn will make you look better, more refreshed, happier, and more confident.
Good Luck,
Robin M.

I'm pretty sure that sit-ups alone don't cause weight loss in your abdominal area.
If done properly they can help you to develop muscle in this area which can have a tightening effect (pulling everything in) and hence reduce waist size a little.

There is no such thing as spot reducing. Working your abs builds the muscles underneath the fat. The only way to make your stomach smaller is to lose weight overall. Working the muscles is of course a good idea because once you lower your body fat percentage your abs will look really good. And abs help you do most activities throughout your day.

No, If anything sit-ups are more likely to make your belly more rotund as the muscles exercised are underneath a layer of fat that gets pushed out as the muscles expand.
A better exercise for a flatter stomach is the plank.
Loss of body fat is better achieved through sustained exercise like walking which after a while starts to burn up stored fat - as well as exercising your core muscles. I don't think it's possible to target which part of the body fat is accessed metabolically but I'm sure there's someone somewhere who will sell you a miracle cure.

No.
You CANNOT spot-reduce fat. Period.
You lose/gain fat according to your genetics.
Sit-ups build abdominal muscles.
There is no process that removes fat at the point of exercise.
Fat is removed in a specific order (according to your genetics)no matter what kind of exercise you do.

You actually might gain weight - muscle weighs more than fat. The benefit of the sit-ups is that it will firm up your abs and make you look thinner and more fit.
