Press "Alt-F4" lots of times. If it comes with "Shut down", "cancel" it, and continue. "Ctrl-Alt-Del", is old-fashioned... =P

If you are trying to install something, and are told to close all open programs -- surely you are not running more than a couple. Just click the X in the upper right corner. When you return to the desktop and do not see any minimized tabs indicating an open program, you should be good to go. I don't think you want to fly without a net by closing your antivirus program.

If downloading, it will also help to turn off the screensaver and wallpaper. This will free up even more memory. Actually, I have mine set to blank and none.

Right-click each running task on the taskbar, then click "Close" or "Close Group". There is no single command (as far as I know) for stopping all processes simultaneously. (Well, there is, it's called shut-down!).

-best luck
