I've lost my car registration and insurance papers, had them in the pocket in a small plastic wallet and they fell out. My questions are these...What do I do now? Do I call the insurance company? Do I call the DMV? And most importantly of all, what will happen if someone finds them, and decides not to return them to me, what can they do with it? Also, can i still drive safely and quietly without them for the time being?

Many states require you to carry those 2 documents.
so it is imperative to get them as soon as posible {in case you are pulled over by the police}
Your insurance agent will provide a new card for you easily enough. This can be done by phone & fax.

For the registration card: Go to your local DMV or Secretary of State Office.
Bring with you proper I.D. & vehicle information, as well as the plate/tag info.
Tell them you need to fill out an "Affirmation of Registration" form & receive a duplicate registration card..
There shouldn't be a fee at all for this, but if your state charges one it will be nominal.

Other than the fact that if found--sombody knows where you live, what you drive, & who insures you ....there is little to be gained with this knowledge. But you might want to report it to your local police just in case.

If someone finds them there isn't much they can do with them. Your insurance card does have your VIN on it and only works for your car, not some stranger with a different make and model. But if your address is on the registration, now someone knows your name and address, so watch for any problems there.

As to the insurance card, just contact your agent and get a duplicate, they can print one up for you at the office. Are you close to time to register the vehicle? If so, when you get your reminder and pay the fees you will get a new registration card anyway. If not you might stop by the office and tell them it was lost and get a duplicate. There may be a fee, but it should be fairly small.

is your name and number in the phone book? if so, dont worry about anyone finding your papers, you`re ALREADY in the phone book and anyone can find you!

As far as the appers themselves, DMV can give you a new Reg., The actual title is still in you name and locked away somewhere,right??

Call the insurance company to give you replacement cards.

no big deal.

I'm not sure about Missouri, but where I live all you have to do is bring a picture ID, such as a driver's license or a passport to prove who you are if you are already registered. I lost my card too and am going to have to do that myself.
