-You should try the cross word puzzle, it excersizes your mind to help you understand bigger words and enlarge your vocabulary.
-Read the dictionary. Not in order, but every night before you go to bed read some random words. Remember, even if they aren't big, they can still make you sound smart. And too many big words will make you sound stupid, like you are trying to hard.
Tip: Try out the words you learn on your friends and family. It's like learning a new language, if you don't use what you learn, it will just fade away, only to be a small flicker of air in the ongoing wind. *grins*

To get you started:

Conflagration (noun)-A large destructive fire.

^Also my favorite word. It's really fun to learn new words. And don't go crazy at night trying to learn ten, or even five words at a time. You would forget them. Start out learning the maximum of three, then...in the morning, if you have time, learn some more. Don't forget to review!

Well, read lots of books and look up all the words you don´t know.
For fun I read the Thesaurus. Its a book that will give you lots of words that are similar if not the same as the original. Just remember that all words even when similar are not used in the same way. So before using a synonym check the definition. Many words have more then one meaning.
Good Luck on your Quest!
PS: It´s a good idea to keep a log of new interesting words (like a-b-c´s - a few pages each letter) to look back on over time. This helps retain memory.

Read the right books that interest you. There is no point reading books with words if you are bored.

I applaud you for striving to better yourself.

However, be careful as nobody sounds as stupid as a person spouting out big words in the wrong content. It's better to use the words you know in the correct content.

Make sure you know how to use the new words you learn in the correct content.

That can only come with practice. Perhaps you could go on an advanced English course?

Good luck in your quest.

Try getting a thesaurus and looking up synonyms for words that you already use, but bigger, more important sounding ones. One of the best ways to improve your vocabulary, is to read voraciously...read everything you can get your hands on! Not only will you be very well read, but you'll learn a whole host of new words...

If you want bite size chunks, you can't go wrong with a "word of the day", if you happen to have a "my yahoo" or "my google" start page, they will have a module you can put in that will give you a random word from the dictionary with definitions.

Or just do a search and find tons of sites that will send you one daily by e-mail.

Do lots and lots and lots of reading - and whenever you come across a word you don't know, look it up and memorize it. Make an effort to do this for five words a day - believe me soon you will know more big words than anyone else around you.

Read the dictionary. Every day choose one or two new words, and try to use them at least three times in conversation throughout the day. Keep a list of all of your old words, and study it when you have free time (Waiting in a line, on the bus, etc.).
