Actually they do play the National Anthem. It is usually played before the start of the day's racing. So if your watching races like the derby or the preakness on t.v. your not going to see them sing the National Anthem because they sang it before the first race of the day. Every horse track across America plays the National Anthem before they start their day's races. I work with race horses and I haven't been to a track yet that didn't play the National Anthem before the start of the day's races.

A better question would be why do they bother to sing the national anthem at any sporting event. There really doesnt seem to be any real reason for it, and seeing as in most sports the teams are made up of players from around the world, why bother. As far as horse racing being the only sport, what about Golf, Boxing, and I am sure most sports other than the Big 4 which are Hockey, Baseball, Basketball and Football.

I have both heard and seen the National Anthem sung on the pre-race broadcasts of all the Triple Crown races. It is usually played and sung while the horses are in the paddock area- and the other song, if there is one, is played as the horses step onto the track for the race.

It has been a long time since I have been to the track for the start of a day of racing. It is possible that the anthem is sung at the start of the day's racing. This would not be seen on television, since the big races like the Derby & Preakness occur later in the afternoon and television networks only show that one race. The only exception might be on Breeder's Cup Day, but even then they show only a select few races.

Im not sure, but I would have to say that there is probablt to much nationality in the sport. The can play one jockey's national anthem and not the other. Its just a thought.

Horse racing is not legal in all states, so they sing the state song. Like at the Kentucky Derby they sing "My Old Kentucky Home"
