I'm 18 years old and thinking about getting my first tattoo. I'm not sure what will happen with my future at all, especially reguarding having a child one day and I was wondering, If I did have a tattoo and then later in my life had a child, do you think it would affect me as a father in a childs eyes?

-The tattoo i was thinking about getting would be on my shoulder blades. It is an Eye in the center of it with an Owl on one side along with a Hawk on the other while there wings are spread to appear to be coming from the eye, and there claws hold a banner that says "Una Vista Una possibilità" which is Italian for One life One chance.

why would you get a tattoo if you felt that way. sounds like a regret issue and if you feel that way them do not get the tattoo. i would be more worried about my child one day getting a tattoo.

First, if you've always had the tattoo from the time the child was born, they won't even really know anything different. Children form judgement about people/things because of the way the are raised and usually get those judgement from their parents.
As far as PARENTS of other children - well that's a different story and something you might have to deal with in the future. That's just the nature of the beast. I tend to make sure mine are covered at school functions.
Try getting a tattoo at 38 when you child is 12. Want to know how that affected my son? He loved it and loves the bigger one I just got at 39 when he was 13. Having a strong loving bond with your child is all that matters - not what the ink is on you skin.

It will not affect you in your child's eyes...in your child's eyes you'll be daddy regardless of what you look like, how you dress or if or if you don't have tattoos. The only way that it may affect things re: a child is this...your child may want a tattoo because daddy has one.

My daughter is only 2 and loves to look at my tattoo. (I only have one...pretty small 3.5x3) It's a side portrait of her and her Chinese name (her real Chinese name not some random thing my artist made up). I got it age 29 after about a year of planning and designing and learning about the art of tattooing. My decision was this...if my daughter wants a tattoo, she needs to be mature enough too (18 doesn't guarantee being mature enough) and not get a tattoo simply to get a tattoo if that makes sense. I also want her to wait until she has her definate likes and dislikes. For me personally, my likes and dislikes have changed alot since I turned 18. I can honestly say that if I had gotten something I would have liked at age 18, I would most likely have gotten a coverup - my likes have changed alot and I don't feel they were definate at 18.

This is me personally...for others it may be different.

best of luck in your decision.

The time that you will spend with your future children will have more of an effect on them than any tattoo that you may get. If your a good person so begin with you will make for a very good father. If your still concerned on what effect the tattoo may have; then pick one that you would not have any qualms about showing to anybody. Just be sure to eat something before you get your tattoo. When my daughter got her first tattoo she did not and got sick of her stomach afterwards.

Having any form of body art affects any person at any age no matter what. If your child asks what it is, then sit down and explain to them that it is a tattoo. If they end up wanting one, then set limits as to how many and what they can get while under your roof. WIth that said, I am the proud owner of a rose on my right shoulder balde and a treble clef set in a heart on my left shoulder blade. However, it would be best to get it in a place where it could be covered up, so that way if your child does take offense to it, you can cover it up.

Would you think any less of your parents if you just now found out they had tattoos? Depends on how you raise your kid.

I got a tattoo when I turned 18, of my favorite band logo (just like everyone says not to). 6 and a half years later, I still love it, still love the band, no regrets whatsoever. I stare at the tattoo sometimes when I'm bored. I love it. Thinking about getting it touched up and lettered this week actually.

The band is the now-defunct Murder City Devils if anyone was wondering.

No...I know a guy who just had a kid and got "enjoy the ride" in big, tupac-style letters across his chest. Now that is something a kid might not appreciate when going with dad to the pool, but your idea sounds like it means something to you and it will most likely be a source of pride for your future child. Just love them no matter what and they will do the same.

BTW: My husband has 28 tattoos and counting and we are about to have a son. We aren't worried.

I think it depends on what you get and where you have it put. I do have a tattoo but its on my chest I have a choice on if I want people to see it or not. I think if a person gets one it should be in good taste and not all over their body. I don't think it would have an affect on you being a father in a child's eye

I think that if you are a good father then any children you may have will love you regardless of any tattoos that are on your body. Children are very open and loving and forgiving. If you are kind and loving with them then they will surely love you with or without any tattoos. They will love you for you.

Before you get one, however, I would give serious thought to the type of tattoo you are thinking of getting as the content may or may not embarrass them or yourself at some later point in life. :)

for hundreds of years children have had parents with tattoos. they are becoming more and more prevalent. when i have children both of their parents will have tattoos as well as two of their grandparents. it's not something that is going to scar a child for life. there is no reason for you not to get tattooed for the sole purpose of protecting your future children from some possible trauma caused by tattoos. if anything it will cause them to be less judgemental and more accepting of people who are different than everybody else.
