Sounds as if you’re in Overtype Mode. Is there an “OVR” on the bottom line of the window? If so, press the Insert key once.

If this happens every time you open a document, your Options are probably set to start in Overtype mode. Here's how you can fix that:

1. Click on the Tools->Options menu item.
2. Click on the Edit page.
3. Under Editing Options, make sure the Overtype Mode checkbox is clear.
4. Click OK.

If you look at the bottom of the Word window you will see the letters
OVR
If these letters are in grey then the over type option is turned off. If they are in black then the over type option is on.
Press the insert key to change this option. Have a go and look at the letters. They will change when you press the insert key.
So now you are in more control.

You have to turn off the overtype function. Go to Tools. Then to Options. Then go to the Edit tab. Uncheck Overtype Mode. Click OK. You should be fine
