The R34, while the very best of the GT-R nameplate as of now, is not the end all-be all of tuner cars. The RB26DETT is a fantastic motor, but it's in a very heavy car.
It also depends on what model M3 the OP is considering.
Stock for stock, it would be pretty close as the M3 has the power to weight advantage, but only on the roll. The GT-R would most likely destroy it from a standing start.
A fully tuned M3 is a beast. But it's a lot of money to get that far. BMW parts aren't cheap, nor are R34 GT-R parts.
The GT-R responds alot better to simple bolt-ons than the M3.
It all comes down to what you want out of your car.

It would really depend on 2 things
-What year M3?
If 2007 I would say not to get it, the 335i is at least just as cool and less money, but the 335i isn't in this conversation.
-What model R34?
If this were a GTS 4 door, I would deffinately choose the Bimmer, as well as if it were a 2 door. Non-turbo R34 FTL! If it were at leas the GTS-T I would choose the R34, but that is because of the rarety in the States.
The R34 GT-R would be top dawg on my list.

The new M3 can definitely blow away the r34 skyline... i mean, it has 90 or so more bhp. Plus, better handling, better acceleration. Furthermore, whats good about BMW is that they endorse RWD, which helps bring the weight-distribution in a car to a near 50-50 balance. A very important factor in cars overall performance. The M3 is an amazing car.

Skyline Illegal, BMW M-3 legal As for parts BMW you would have a chance. Right hand drive? Skylines have there is something about pulling all the way out in traffic to see approching cars passing is dangerious. And driving a 1980's car with out the added safety of air bags. The skyline is over hyped by video games

depends on which model if it was the Nissan Skyline gtr z tune then see you later M3.
Or even the Skyline 400r would be reason to scare the bmw.
One more comment the chap who says Nissan technican iam sure its you who answer to every Skyline comment with abuse about it.
Well no one said there the greatest car in the world, but there the most tunable engine in the world. And with great steering power looks and able to scare cars classes higher than them, and there such great fun
So feel unless owned one unfair to leave a bad comment about them.
End of the day would feel cooler in the Nissan than the Bmw as everyone has one nowdays.

It depends on the condition. If they were at their full potential, the R34 would win( I own one, they are beasts). Stock, the M3 would win
