Generally dogs will give a warning like growlling or snarling before biting but not always - the more dangerous dog will give no warning at all just bite - if you come accross a dog thats with its owner ask if you can pat it - if you come across a dog with no owner keep walking and walk confidently and generally the dog will just walk by you - however I remember being a child and a dog without its owner was stalking me growling and snarling my mother heard me scream and sore what was going on and ran towards the dog making a loud roaring sound and it chased the dog off - I spent 5 years as an obdeience instructor and have owned dogs from dobermans to Irish Wolf Hound to Shih-tzu's basically if a dog thinks your scared they ar e ore likely to react than if you show confidence.

To get to know a dog that bites you must move very slowly around them and never look them directly in the eye. Carry treats with you and offer it to them with your hand opened out under the chin. Repeat this and make sure that the owner is always nearby to control the dog from biting you. He needs to learn your scent and how you react to him. Show no fear or he will feed on it and will bite you. If he comes to you and acts as if he is going to bite say "No, sit." firmly and stand your ground. If you have too grab him by the back of the neck and hold on tightly like a mother carrying its baby and squeeze like another dog biting him and say "Chht, Chht. loudly and then push him on his side and make him be submisive to you. You may then pet him, this will take several times with the owner around before the dog realizes that you are the leader of this pack and he is no longer in control. Presuming it's not an attack dog: In conjunction with it's owner, let him approach, do not make eye contact, stand still with your arms by your side. Never run. Slowly crouch down, and still not looking at him, offer the back of your hand for him to sniff. Better if it's a fist if you think he might bite it. If that is ok, reach up from underneath his neck, NOT from above his head, and give him a scratch behind his ears.

BE careful and approach him or her very slowly.
Show him your hands, open!!!!!
And try to be his size, go on your knees if you have to.
But always very slowly, you should let him decide to come closer. Just stay in front of him and wait.
And don't, I repeat DON'T look a dog in the eyes when they are afraid of angry!
Please be careful, you never know what he thinks.

try to get the dog to come to you first then try to pet him and if the dog bites pop it on the bottom eventually he/she will stop biting.
