place a heating pad on the joints for fifteen minutes. Massage an analgesic cream into the area at the temples. Wait fifteen minutes then Place clean tap water into a foam cup and place in your freezer until it is completely frozen. Peel back a small amount of the top of the cup and massage this onto area of pain using constant circular motion. DO NOT hold the ice in one area for more than 3 minutes since this may cause frostbite. Cold therapy should be stopped once the skin feels numb.
Advil soft gel capsules should be taken four times daily to help with the pain.
If this does not help see your dentist.

I have been dealing with TMJ for almost 20 years now. I know just how painful it is. I t will only get worse as time goes by. I myself need to have my jaw broken then reset and wired shut for 6 weeks. I have done extensive research on this and found this to be the best option in every case I have seen. It is drastic but works for the rest of your life. It is common practice. Just be sure to find an oral surgeon who has done this many times and feels it is the best option for you. Good Luck!

See a dentist who treats TMJ. For me, I was clenching and grinding my teeth all night which was tightening the muscles and creating the pain. My dentist filed down some of my teeth so they fit together better and I got a mouth guard to buffer when I was grinding.
A lot of times, though, it's made worse by anxiety and stress, so reducing stress either by learning better coping skills or doing relaxation techniques can help as well.

Yes, but it is expensive surgery, you could wear a gear in your mouth made for tmj but I found it to be very uncomfortable. I just live with it and see a chiropractor, this has taken care of the headaches that are associated with tmj. See a dentist regularly as teeth grinding is common with this condition.

I went to my chiropractor for my TMJ and eventually he was able to get my jaw back into alignment and my TMJ went away. I used alot of tylenol and Motrin. I also wore a bite splint at night. You can buy them at about any drug store. It helps keep you from grinding and makes the pain much less upon waking. Warm compresses also were helpful.

Some maxillofacial surgeons are injecting Botox into the muscles around the joint with good results.
