A large tract of land surrounded by hills that is highly secure with regular patrols and survelance cameras. It is the reputed storage point of the Roswell crash debris and other UFO technology.
It is also one of the USAF`s test grounds for new technology and the next generation of aircraft..
Much speculation surrounds the base as staff and equipment is regularly flown in to avoid the attention of the public.Unless you work there or have very good inside knowledge of its current programmes you will never know for sure.......You could always check out the google earth site and look at the state of Nevada

Area 51, or to give it it’s official title Air Force Flight Test Centre, Detachment 3, is a highly classified military base at Groom Lake, Nevada situated around 90 miles north of Las Vegas.
Due to contrary belief the US government does not deny the existence of the facility (indeed in can be found in the official list of property owned by the US Department of Defence), but does refuse to talk about what the base is used for, and refuses to acknowledge that the base is ‘active’
The name Area 51 originated after the alleged UFO crash at Roswell in July 1947, some of the wreckage was said to be stored in Hangar 51 on the base.
The main base it’s self consists of a large runway and a large number of hangars and research buildings, it’s main use is probably in the Research of enemy aircraft (particularly during the cold-war) and the development and testing of advanced future combat aircraft and weapons systems.
Other areas of the base are used by US and British special forces as training areas, in my time in the Royal Marines I spent 6 months there on secondment to a US unit based there.

Area 51 contains an airfield whose primary purpose is believed to be the operation and analysis of enemy aircraft and weapons systems, and secret development and testing of new military aircraft. Area 51 is the frequent subject of UFO conspiracy theories.

Its secretive nature and undoubted connection to classified aircraft research, together with reports of unusual phenomena, have led Area 51 to become a focus of modern UFO and conspiracy theory. Some of the unconventional activities claimed to be underway at Area 51 include:

a) The storage, examination, and reverse engineering of crashed alien spacecraft (including material supposedly recovered at Roswell), the study of their occupants (living and dead), and the manufacture of aircraft based on alien technology.
b) Meetings or joint undertakings with extraterrestrials.
c) The development of exotic energy weapons (for SDI applications or otherwise) or means of weather control.
d) The development of time travel technology.
e) Activities related to a supposed shadowy one world government.

Many of the hypotheses concern underground facilities at Groom or at nearby Papoose Lake, and include claims of a transcontinental underground railroad system, a disappearing airstrip (nicknamed the "Cheshire Airstrip", after Lewis Carroll's Cheshire cat) which briefly appears when water is sprayed onto its camouflaged asphalt, and engineering based on alien technology.

Several high-tech super-secret planes were developed and tested at Area-51, including the U-2, SR-71 Blackbird and the F-117 Stealth Fighter . More recent projects include the rumored high speed high altitude "Aurora", various unmanned planes (UAVs) and a new stealth plane to replace the F-117.

Area- 51 has been a part of our popular culture, due to it's secretive nature, and it's place in UFO research. What ever is there out in Area-51, will be an enigma for future generations. First off, I would like to deny that we even have Area 51...if you are talking about the video game, then that's another story.

If you insist that you want to know...then it's one of those things that if I tell you, I'll have to kill you stuff.

Hope that helps.

From all the reports it is a military testing facility for new aircraft and aircraft equipment. The latest greatest designs of metals, electronics, engines etc that go into aircraft.

Of course there are the stories about it being a place for the study of extraterrestrial equipment that the military has possession of.

I don't think anyone knows the ACTUAL answer, but you can find the place on Google Earth. My personal opinion is that the American government are keeping evidenece of E. T. Life there, but are worried about the public reaction if they found out.
