You're realising the problem with using faith to find truth, I commend you for managing that realisation having been a Christian. You've already answered your own question. There is no "I see what you mean, but you've got the wrong idea about how faith works", you hit the nail on the head. Something you KNOW to be true is something testable or observable, otherwise you have no reason to have believed it in the first place. Drop a pencil, it will fall every time if put under the same conditions. This is a fact. With faith, you say you TRIED to believe, and that's the core of religious faith; you have to want it to be real. It's kind of like a grumpy teacher with a soft spot for one kid because he's cute. Child 1 throws a paper aeroplane, brat with detention. Child 2 throws a paper aeroplane, brat with detention. Child 3 throws a paper aeroplane, I prefer this kid so I'm sure he was just joining in, I'll let it slide. Likewise, religious faith works on criticising everything else harshly but not applying the same principles to your own religion. You'll find Atheists posting questions about such contradictions all the time, with the usual response of "the Christian God is the one true God" as their reasons. I suggest looking at Christians debating with Muslims over who has the more valid religion, and watch as they make exactly the same claims then tell each other their arguments are flawed. My holy book is historically accurate and yours isn't. I can feel the presence of my God so I know he's the real one. I have faith. Your holy book is a hoax but mine is real because it's the word of the true God because it says so. Really try asking it on here and see the responses you get from people using faith to reason it out; faith that depends on criticising everything the opponent says then letting it slide when it equally disproves their own religion. Remember above all, truth isn't a democracy. You can't choose the one you like most and jump to conclusions it's fact. It's all about what's testable and observable; anything else is either false or not something we can confirm at this point. Anyone that says you must just have faith, see their reaction when you tell them to have faith in Allah, they'll tell you that "you must have faith" is a terrible claim to make that will only lead you down the wrong path.

In the old testiment there is a passage that states it is wrong to "spill your seed". Let me look and I'll be back.
edit/ additional: It's Genesis 38:9 and talks about Onan wasting his seed on the ground instead of in his brother's widowed wife. Current commentary says both that this means it's wrong to ejaculate and waste the seed and that Onan had disobeyed God.
There is nothing in the Bible about masterbation.
Is it possible to commit adultry with someone /thing who doesn't exist? adultry means sex to me but I'd say it's possible to "cheat" on your commitment by giving anything physical or emotional to anyone or anything else. This could be a movie star, a co-worker, or even a beautiful car you're idolizing.

Being single masturbation is sexual immorality and the images in your mind you are leaving yourself open for sexual bondage, you can only commit adultery in your mind and heart when you are married,by doing such things and actually you are commiting adultery to Jesus for your mind should be stayed on him not a figment of your imagination, cast down all thoughts and imaginations and bring them into obedience with the Lord Jesus Christ. When you are married and you look at porn it is committing adultery,we should stay away from porn, iilecit pictures and anything that is displeasing to God. I will be praying for you.Lisa

The theologists say it is wrong. I can't understand why people quote old testaments when they believe in new testaments. No religious book says that sex is wrong. But all some how prohibit men and women doing things in public. The sexual organ is one part of your body. Why give too much attention to that part while you are free to massage all other parts of your body. What has Onan done and got the wrath of God might have been only symbolic- to warn others that whatever things, even bad, if God willed, you have to obey Him.

I'm not Christian, so I'm afraid I'm not really qualified to answer your question. However, I do know that the story of Onan being punished for spilling his seed wasn't an injunction against masturbation. God wanted him to get this girl pregnant, but he spilt his seed on the ground instead. The story's really more about coitus interruptus, possibly contraceptive methods generally, but mainly about not obeying God.

Masturbation is a hard habit to break. Sexuality is meant to be part of a loving relationship of real and permanent self-giving and masturbation is not a part of that.
Don't obsess about masturbation because that will make it a habit even harder to break. Turn to God and He will help you

"But I say unto you, That whosoever looketh on a woman to lust after her hath committed adultery with her already in his heart." - Matt 5:28 KJV
If? it is on our HEART already then we commit SIN. Before we do something, it must begin in our heart then the body followed.
SOW a THOUGH, REAP an ACT;
SOW an ACT, REAP A HABIT.
SOW a HABIT, REAP a CHARACTER.

What makes sin so evil is the harm it causes.
Obviously, adultery causes harm.
Just as obviously, as long as you aren't involving anyone else in your private fantasies, you aren't causing harm.
Ergo, masturbation, as long as no other living person is involved. is not a sin.
OH, Greywolf is thinking of the story of a man named Onan, who had married his dead brother's wife according to Jewish law and custom, but did not want to get her pregnant, since he didn't want to "raise up seed to his brother". God slew him, we are told.
Evidently, God is very interested in how we conduct ourselves in our personal relationships, however, Onan was not masturbating. He was having sex with his dead brother's wife in order that his brother's name might not die out of Israel, and he refused to keep his part of the bargain.
Naughty Onan.....
