That's only according to every single scientific study (not sponsored by the tobacco industry) on the matter. It not only shortens YOUR life, the second hand smoke that others breath in causes them more risks of illness.

It is estimated that tobacco will be the cause of 1 out of every 5 cases of cancer. It will kill 1 billion people this century alone. It's responsible for more deaths than all the people who have died in every single war back to the dawn of civilization.

The chemical that the smoker is enjoying is called nicotine. In small doses it causes a stimulation effect to the body, it tightens blood vessels and stimulates dopamine production in the brain. The brain quickly gets used to higher levels of dopamine and wants more. It's a cause and effect cycle that keeps a smoker addicted.

Nicotine is also one of the deadlier chemicals know to man. Nicotine sulfate has been used as an insecticide.

This in combination with the tar the smokers body absorbs, heavy metals, carbon dioxide and other pollutants greatly contribute to the free radicals being released into a smokers system. On every pack of cigarettes sold in the USA a warning is printed on the side stating "Quitting smoking now great reduces serious risks to your health" or something similar.

I smoked for years. When I finally did quit it took almost a year and a half until the cravings disappeared. It's nice to be able to draw in a lung full of air without the feeling of that cough tickle.

This maybe be a oversimplified analogy but I am forced to post it anyway...

Crossing the street can be dangerous. Once in a while a person gets hit by a car and killed. But the need to cross is great and there is little chance of getting hurt as far as statistics go. Imagine if 1 out of every 6 people were hit by a car while crossing the street? You would think that there would be serious interventions to find a way to mitigate that danger. Like I stated above 1 out of 6 people who smoke get cancer from that smoking. It's estimated that world wide 1 out of every 6 people smoke. The numbers are staggering.

Stopping smoking kills most people.........When your lungs are protected from ailments by being coated with tar and other bugs and infections are destroyed by the nicotine it is a shock to the system to give up smoking and be open to all these elements once more. Since GIVING UP smoking (voluntary) I have had Asthma, Bronchitis, Angina, Coughs, Colds, Bad Teeth, Headaches and a lot more stress. After 50 years of protection I am now vulnerable to all the nasties imaginable. Smoking may shorten your life but at least you can stay well enough to enjoy it for longer.

Apparently smoking does shorten your life, but so do alot of other things like breathing in pollution but your not going to stop breathing.

They say alot of things are not good for you then say ooops sorry, we made a mistake.

All you can do is do what makes you happy, you could get hit with a truck and die tomorrow so if you go through life not doing things just because it will shorten your life or harm you then you may as well live in a bubble.

Just weigh the odds of what your doing in your life and make your own decisions, no-one else can make them for you because it all depends on what you want to do with your life and how much you choose to enjoy it.

Yes, it is very true. If you smoke you will loose 8 minutes of your life for every cigarette you smoke. Just because you can't see it doesn't mean it isn't happening. Your lungs and brain function and blood are the first things to get affected by this pollution that people enter into thier bodies. And almost everytime the result will end up with some form of cancer.

So the Government say but, i know of ALOT of people who smoked most of their lives & died around age 80-90yrs old. Look, i'd be happy to die at 70. You can die of heart attack, being hit by a bus, having a car accident or from an operation gone wrong. You have got just as much chance, if not more chance of being killed before your old, by other things other than smoking.

Smoking is harmful to our bodies in many ways, but it is the most harmful to the lungs. Smoke from cigarettes contains tar, which sticks to the cilia in our lungs. The cilia usually act like little brooms to sweep out harmful dirt, but when you smoke cigarettes, the cilia can't work because they're covered in sticky tar. That means that dirt can stay in the lungs and cause problems. Even if you don't smoke, your lungs are still in danger if you breathe in smoke from another person's cigarette. This is called second-hand smoke, and it isas dangerous as smoking the cigarette yourself! That's why you should always try to stay away from smokey places. Keep your lungs healthy and stay away from cigarette smoke!Reasons to Never Start Smoking:
Even one cigarette slows down your cilia (the little "brooms" in your lungs). Heavy smoking kills the cilia.
Mucus and dirt pile up and germs don't get swept out. Smokers get sick more often than non-smokers.
Tar sticks to the insides of your lungs and can cause cancer.
Nicotine (a drug in tobacco) makes your blood vessels smaller. That means your heart has to work harder to pump the blood.
A very dangerous gas called carbon monoxide is in cigarette smoke. It is also found in car exhaust! It gets into your blood and doesn't let the oxygen in. That means your heart has to work even harder to get enough oxygen for your cells.
Smoking can kill you. Be smart, and don't start!

I don't think so. I know of a 90 year old who still smokes. I quit 8-9 months ago. I couldn't afford paying for cigarrettes & running the health risks. Yes you run risks when you smoke but it is for you personally to decide not me lecture you. Try WebMD.com for accurate info.

Smoking is a nasty habit that causes many health problems, including problems for the people around you because of second-hand smoke. In addition, it's a waste of many and it makes you smell really bad.

DUH??? Look around you, do you see many old smokers? If you do, do they look healthy, are they hacking, coughing, and barely able to move? Cigarettes age your skin, causes cancer, constricts your blood vessels which can affect your sex organs, heart disease, other than that no it won't hurt you, its almost like taking vitamins. It'll wreck your bank account too.
