Now this seems excessive by anybody's standards and it doesn't prevent crime. The UK has socialogical problems but it also has serious criminal problems. At one point we out did the US for murder per capita which nobody believed. Our problems can't be cured by more cameras, that just allows for increased social monitoring. Criminals aren't put off by cameras, they know how to conceal their identity from them.

What's your feeling about the surveilance state in the UK? Or in your own country?

The difference between a plain clothes police man and a cctv operator should be obvious. CCTV operators do a slightly more informative form of training for their SIA license in the UK. However, for their license, they're not vetted to as to suitability to work with children. A criminal record check is done. If the person has convictions, though they may still get licensed if they are deemed to be no threat. The person watching the camera could be a convicted paedophile passing information to part of his circle of friends about the whereabouts of lone vulnerable children.

I understand what Sarah said but cameras don't save childrens lives. They didn't save Jamie Bulger did they?
They just help to find the offender sometimes. Responsible parenting keeps children alive and safe.

Cameras may or may not have kept that little girl safe in Portugal but not leaving her unattended DEFINITELY would have kept her safe.

You can't pass responsibility to law enforcement agencies for the safety of children in your own care.

Jeremy Bentham designed the panopticon, a centre reservation in a prison so he could monitor the prisoners. CCTV is not there because it can stop criminal activities taking place. But it is there to monitor situations. It is a bonus in some situations where it has been known to detect crime and with the help of the police force been able to act upon these incidents and catch criminals before they are able to leave the area's. the real question should be doe's it deter or displace criminal activities.

I LIKE CCTV cameras, I never made it onto TV and they make me feel great, they have me eating my sandwich at lunchtime and had there been CCTV in Portugal the Little girl who was kidnapped may be OK today.

It is JUST LIKE a real policeman watching you in plain clothes and only those with crime on their mind will have a problem with them

Please explain the difference in terms of personal freedom between a CCTV camera and a plain clothes policeman?

,Every government has a reason for making records of a persons movements, it is always to help with law enforcement, in itself a very laudable reason. The IHNTH ( I have nothing to hide) brigade should beware laws can change and draconian powers be given and the IHNTH people a very likely to have something to hide.
Let me list some of them
!. Member of a political party
2. Member of a professional body (gov hates accountants lawyers architects
3. Has been or is a member of a youth organisation
Scouts, Guides, Boys Brigade or YHA Ramblers Association, Red Cross

All sorts of people do not like these organisations, they could form a majority in the Cabinet and for MP's to vote against the would be like turkeys voting for Christmas

It doesn't bother me, I don't feel I am being watched, becuase if the cameras are on everyone, I don't feel singled out & you can be sure they don't st down & watch every, single, person, walking or shopping etc..it can't be entertaining...
it gives some level od safety & adds a warning to some...might not work becos as said criminals know get round everything...
we'll catch them!!.

Where I live the nearest CCTV is 1 mile away, and they (3) are situated at a small shopping precint.
The nearest ones after that, are 7 miles away.
We don`t have car thieves, we don`t have burglars, we don`t have anti-social louts, we don`t have granny muggers.
Pretty boring really lol.
