I am seriously thinking about getting a toy poodle but a few people have told me they bark all the time and are agressive. Is this true?

Toy poodles are great if you buy them from a good source. This means a breeder who does the requisite health testing (eyes for PRA and knee xrays) and who raises them in their home with lots of socialization. A toy poodle raised in a pet store, puppy mill or even the well meaning backyard breeder can definitely be a menace to society! Socialization on your part is key too- if you keep that pup wrapped in a blanket carrying him around the majority of his puppyhood, and don't let him see the world between 10 weeks (the right age for a toy to leave a breeder) and 16 weeks you could end up with a aggressive, scared barking, biting little rat dog. Go to dog shows and talk to breeders and handlers after they have finished showing- they will be more than happy to talk to you about their breeds. Or better yet, rescue a toy from a poodle rescue- that way you'll be helping and can know the personlity a little better from the get go!

I had one for 13 years and never experienced that. They are an intelligent bred and thus, easily bored. They need something to do and quite a bit of attention. But a dog will react and respond to what they are taught by you, the alpha 'dog.' Do not reward bad behaviours. If they bark at an inappropriate time for no reason, startle the dog with either a toot of a horn, or a blast of air on them, or rattle a container with metal in it. Aversion therapy. Say "NO" loudly when applying the aversion. Apply the same technique if a dog shows aggression. My poodle never required this treatment. As a pup, she was handled gently, and often and didn't develop the problems you mentioned. I think they are great pets. Good luck.

My toy just died 2 months ago. She lived with me for 14 years. Of all the non-shedding breeds, the Poodle is the one the looks the best (If you dont cut it in the way those show dogs are cut). All the other ones are fluffy. They do bark but only if there's a stranger and unless it's provoked it will never bite anyone. Those who consider them agressive misinterpret the fact that they jump all over you when you get home and are always happy to see you. Incredible dog. If you can get one, get it and you wont regret it.

I was told the same over and over about Chihuahua's, but if they are trained they won;t do this. If they are just carried around and left to o as they wish yet they will yap and yap and be snappy.

I have 4 Chi's who bark when someone comes to the door and will be quiet as soon as I say "Enough." They have never snapped at anyone.

A lot depends on you. If you put in the time and effort you will have a great little friend. If you don;t you will have a problem. Just the same with any dog.

Oh and it's called a "Toy" dog because of it's size. No other reason. They can be very nasty even though they are small if not trained. Just being so small they can;t do much damage.

It all depends on where you get the toy poodle from. A good breeder strives to for good temperment and good health. Consider a miniature poodle or a Bishon Frise'. Go to a dog show and talk with some owners of toy poodles or other breeds that interest you.

this is not any longer something too drastic. A Toy is probably a touch more beneficial probably to be injured than a Miniature, and a Miniature would wish a touch more beneficial exercising than a Toy, yet fairly that basically varies canine-to-canine. if you're paying for a nicely bred animal you gained't see any adjustments in temperament/trainability. this is as a rule what properly you in my opinion favor.

If it doesn't weigh at least thirty pounds it really isn't a dog... toy poodles are terrible creatures... why not get a cat? If you want a dog, I suggest a Labrador.

All dogs bark so it's your choice if you want to train him to stop barking (eg. if someone is at the door). All small dogs are aggressive towards kids. If you have young children, don't get any small dog. It's a good idea to research his temperament at http://www.dogbreedinfo.com before you decide to get one.

Yes they are vocal. Yes they can be aggressive especially around children.
You may want to check into this.
Also, grooming can be expensive. You need to have them groomed at least once a month.
I only know this because of my sister in laws, and her's just bit a 10yr old and she constantly needs to have him cleaned and groomed.
