cornmeal is a flour made from corn.

as far as i know, cornmeal isnt toxic to rats - they will probably love it.

however, uncooked cornmeal could be contaminatied with Fumonisins (a type of fungus) which is highly toxic to rats. it is probably this that led to the belief that cornmeal is toxic, not the cornmeal itself.

cornmeal can be bought at any grocery store in the baking aisle near the flour and pancake mix. I have not heard of it being used to kill rats, just ants. I heard beer will kill rats. Learn something new every day, I guess. You put the beer in a low baking pan and just leave it where you suspect the rats are. (this is from the so-called 'rat hunter' of NYC)

It's milled, or ground up, corn. That's all. I don't know about rats.
