"ignorance of scripture is ignorance of christ" st. jerome
i think this applies to mass, ignorance of mass is ignorance of christ. when you fully understand what the mass is you won't be bored. for catholics the mass isn't a time for jokes, come and go as you please, worship music for the majority of service etc. the mass is a time for reverance and it is truly beautiful. the mass is entirely scriptural line for line. at its heart is the eucharist, the greatest gift when you understand it. so why then do we get bored at mass? lack of understanding and appreciation. at an age when almost all people want to do is watch movies, sing, dance and want everything to be quick and convenient is why for some mass leads to boredom. no offence to anyone, this is my humble opinion.

If the meaning and purpose of what's going on during Mass has not been adequately explained to you, then it's not hard to see why you become bored with it. Some parishes are better at catechesis than others; the same can be said for Catholic parents.
If your parish or one nearby has an active RCIA program (classes for converts, or simply those who wish to lean more about the faith -- including those who are already Catholic), sit in on a class or two sometime. You'd be most welcome to do so. The parish office can put you in touch with the RCIA coordinator, who can tell you when they'll be discussing the Mass.
In the meantime, there's a very good book called "If Your Mind Wanders At Mass" by Thomas Howard. Amazon has used copies available for less than $5 (link below). Well worth reading.

The only way I can conceive that one could be bored at Mass is because they do not understand what is going on and the significance of the Mass. I would suggest that you go to your priest or deacon and explain your feelings and understandings and ask them what you are missing. You can also study yourself by reading what the Catechism says about the Mass and the Eucharist. Once you realize that during Mass, by the miracle of our Lord, you are at the foot of the cross at the one sacrifice for all with St. John and St. Mary our boredom will disappear. How can one be bored while in the real corporeal presence of our Lord?

Because we are basically selfish. When my mind begins to wander during mass I look at the people around me. I try to live in their mind and imagine the trials and tribulations they have gone through and wonder if they are here for the same reasons. I look at the priest and wonder why he chose to become one.
Then the children, who get bored as well and then I smile and see I am a child just like them. And before I realize it, the long mass comes to an end and I am happy because I took time out to observe and have compassion for someone else other than me.

I grew up Catholic and for me it was mostly the same thing over and over again. You get into the habit of doing it and you disconnect for it and its more like your just wasting time on a Sunday morning.

Probably because there is a lack of variation. It is a mechanical process that seeks to impact your subconsciousness with entraining methods.

Not understanding, and therefore not appreciating, what is actually happening can lead to a feeling of boredom.
