They turn in circles before they lay down too. It's an instinct to knock down the tall grass in a natural environment.

They need to walk to stimulate their digestive tract. That is why whenever you see someone out walking their dog, the dogs are always stopping to take a dump, and people are supposed to carry poop bags to clean up after them. ( Not that most people do! )
