Sydney lies on the east coast of Australia. The most expensive suburbs are those around the harbour and with a view of the sea. These can be called the eastern suburbs. As you move further west across the Cumberland Plain you have more and more areas available for housing until you reach the Nepean/Hawkesbury River about 50km west of the city. West of the river, the land rises to the Blue Mountains. The Cumberland plain has most of the people of Sydney and these are the western suburbs.
The city itself is on the eastern edge of the whole. The centre of Sydney is Paramatta, 20km west of the city. As the western suburbs start at Newtown, about 4km from central Sydney, the vast majority of the people of Sydney live in the western suburbs. If that is where most of the people are, that is where most of the crime is.

It's a bit of a perception issue, actually. There's no 'more' crime in the west than the east, just different types.
Your westie crim might steal a car and leads the cops a merry chase, but the corporate crim in the east will steal from thousands with a stroke of the pen.
The fact is that most people in both places a decent, law abiding people and no-one deserves to be stereotyped or considered a 'crim' or anything else because of where they live!

ill only speak for Melbourne, originally it was industrial/working class but as the cities population has grown and the urban sprawl gets further away from the CBD people have started to realise that the west is one of the closest locations to the city, which has pushed a lot of the house prices in the closer suburbs of the west out of reach of its traditional owners -the working class. suburbs like yarraville, spotswood, seddon, west footscray, newport, williams town, parts of altona are the new suburbs for people with cashola.
there are idiots anywhere Doug and even the wealthy produce their fair share of morons , plus crime doesn't have a boarder it can occur anywhere.
western suburbs these days are starting to break the tags of places for the poor or working class-especially as people look for that next location close to the city.

In most of Australia's capital cities, the western suburbs have been the less attractive (geographically) side of the city consequently property is cheap, less affluent people live there. This results in higher proportions of disabled, disadvantaged and criminals in those areas.Politically, one side of politics figures they don't need to do much for them because 'westies' will always vote for them and the other side agrees!
