You can use a check chain at any age but you can also get a soft material on for younger animals so it does not damage the throat and windpipe when they are young and do not have as much muscle in that area.

Choke chains, are the best tool if used properly, I have been around the breed for 30 years, its not rocket science! Quick jerk & release, not hang them, Martingale collars are OK, it doesn't take many quick jerk & release actions until the dog gets it & conforms! The soft touch doesn't always work, harnesses & halties are OK for the average small to medium soft natured dogs but a stubborn cunning Doberman will laugh at you, put their head down & pull you down the footpath, Prong collars are not good, I rehomed a 5 year old ***** 2 months ago & she had scars around her neck from the previous owners using a prong collar, She lunged at other dogs on the leash, I put on a 30 year old choke chain from my 1st dog, I took her out for 3 walks, on the 2nd walk she could walk past a free dog & not worry about it! 3rd walk she was walking in amongst people & dogs everywhere, this was all done on the 1st day I had her! I put a martingale collar on after that in case she needs reminding, its not cruel to sort out their issues in a day with a choke chain but use it properly & be firm or they will run your home!

Now. Used properly it will not harm the dog. I have trained many dogs with a choker, some large like my 110 lb Giant Schnauzer and as well as my 13 pound Miniature. A firm but not brutal corrective yank at the time of the inappropriate act will let them know they did wrong.

Well I reckon that I know a little about dog training, having trained dogs for 30 years now. I have five dogs now, all on flat collars. I used to train with a check chain, but much prefer flat collars now. I use motivational (reward) based training, and my dogs come when they're called, down on command, etc., etc. If you want to train your dog not to pull, use a treat as an incentive to stay by your side, as opposed to punishment for actually pulling. Give your dog a *reason* for wanting to stay with you. A different outlook, but well worth the effort.

Do NOT use a choke chain and most definitely NOT a pinch collar these both will result in choking the dog and a collapsed trachea if he/she pulls in just the slightest.

Get a Halti or other similar type head halter for your dog. You can start right away, it is much kinder and safer. The Halti goes over the dogs nose and behind the ears, leash will clip under the chin this keeps the dog's nose & attention on you instead of the distraction.
Also this will prevent them from eating bones/garbage on the street when out for a walk it gently closes their mouths.
Training is much more focused, easy and gentle with Halti.
Before I got the Halti my dog slipped right out of his collar in attempting to get a bone on the grass when out for a walk, with the Halti there is no way for them to slip the leash and run on to the road etc
See site below for picture. Available at all pet supply stores, in many sizes and colours.

It has a lot to do with your dog. You can go out and buy the chain and try it. If your dog reacts to it well then leave it on but if it trys to choke its self out before stopping then it would be a good idea to take it off and try something else until the dog gets older. But remember to go back and try it from time to time.

A training (choke) collar should NOT EVER be used on a puppy under the age of 6-8 months.

My puppy is almost 4 weeks old and I have a small like size 8 or 10 purple choke chain on her and she doesn't seem to mind. Anytime would be okay.

You will want to use a pinch collar instead of a choke, it looks worse but is far better for the dog and easier to train for you.. You can start usually as soon as you are walking them regular. Just have to be cautious with it. I learned how to use them at a dog obedience class on German Shepherds and they work 100 times better than choke collars. Good Luck

I trained my Pbull at 4 mos. on a choke chain. Now she uses reg. collar and leash. You must know the proper way to use them and I did not leave it on her all the time also did short practice session with her in the house first so she could get use to it. Hope this helps
