Rich in Natural Resource but (not too) poor in Economy, I'd say Indonesia is in the Middle

here are the statistics:

-Population Living on US$ 1 Dollar 2007: 17% or 39 million

-40 people are the region's Richest with Living on US$ 2.3 billion

-Population Living on US$ 5 million : 3,500 +

-Population classified as Rich Indonesians (living on US$1 million): 6,000 people

-Population Living on a deposit of :US$ 20,000 in their Bank Accounts: More than 39 Million (note that this is the statistic of 2005... it could be doubled)

the rest of the population is probably living on
US$ 1000-5000

Since Indonesia is the largest Country and Economy / Market in its region... I'd say Indonesia has the Most population classified as Rich (yes more than Singapore, Malaysia and Thailand).... but on the other hand also the classified as one of Most Poorest population percentage (17%, (but thats not more than Cambodia (40%) ,Myanmar (25%) ,Laos (30%),Vietnam (19%), Philippines (27%), East Timor (42%) )... so Indonesia is BALANCED

Its a country of extremes, you have the majority of the population living on or below the poverty line yet you have obscene wealth amongst a small number of the elite.
Indonesia is a large country with a wealth of natural resources which unfortunately have found their way into the pockets of a few. Endemic corruption at all levels of society only reinforces the problem.

Well for resources and their cultures and all, Indonesia's quite rich. But yeah, I think Indonesia's quite poor. Too bad.

i have spent a fair amount of time in Indonesia... The people are so friendly and yes, by North American standards they are quite poor.

However, I amazed that 'they have so little' compared to us, yet they as a group are SO VERY much happier than most in North America...

they helped to reaffirm that...

stuff does not equal happiness

:-)
