No french toast is not served in France. It's a dish that originated in the U.S just like french fries.

Considering that it's not really French in origin you might have a hard time. There's some conflicting stories of where it came from but the best would have it's origins in NY and the guy that created it was named "French". So therefore they named it "French toast" after the creator. Other stories say that the cajuns in Louisiana would make "pain perdu" in the same manner and as they spoke French, it was called "French toast" by the tourists. We always called it "pain dore" which may be a French Canadianism but it may also be a name that the French would understand.

Certainly it is. It's a very old French recipe, 'Pain Perdu', which, when it eventually travelled to the US, got renamed (though not really that much) and eventually, like all recipes that travel, further embellished.

Here's an original French recipe:

- 1/2 litre de lait
- 2 œufs
- 50 g de sucre
- 2 cuil. à soupe de sucre vanillé
- cannelle
- 100 g de beurre
- 6 tranches de pain de mie ou de pain rassie

And here's a (southern) US one:

4 eggs
1 teaspoon sugar
1 cup milk
10 to 12 slices white bread
butter
maple syrup or other syrup

Difference? None of intrinsic importance, except the French is scented with vanilla & cinnamon, while the US version is embellished with maple syrup, therefore its sugar is reduced.Their methods are identical. The equally old, equally identical English version is 'eggy bread'...

Hope this helps.

no it's not. It's american food but it's called french toast because the French are so much fancier than us.. and French toast is just toasted bread except on a pan with eggs and cinamon... you follow? haha

Yes. What we call 'french toast' was invented by French people who wanted to do something with day-old baguettes (what we call French bread).

They call it 'milk-bread' or something like that, I think.
