Polygamy is a remnant of marriage-as-slavery. And it's mostly used for Welfare fraud.

the original objection to polygamy was a christian objection. Jews before christians and muslims afterwards practiced polygamy as well as many pagan communities. It is still practiced in african countries for practicle reasons such as greater numbers of females, poverty etc. same sex marriage is pretty much a modern phenomenan that has mostly been rejected as a possibility throuout history. It goes against most theologies, and is inconsistent with the laws of nature.
While love between men is more than conceptually possible , the sexual side of the relationship is unproductive and thus rejected as a feasibile option by most societies. In a democracy however, where homosexuality is not criminalized(as it still is in africa) the idea of homosexual unions has less to do with the moral implications than it does with the legal ones. Basically, if we are free to have a relationship with the same sex then why is marriage ( a legal as welll as religious institution) not afforded to such persons? Marriage is claimed as a religious institution exclusively , which is why i for one say that gay unions be afforded legal rights through the courts exclusively and not to be binding with any or all religious bodies.

I'm not sure who's really disgusted with it but marriage is a contract between equals. In polygamy the parties are not equal - the women do not marry each other, the women marry the man. The women essentially form a class. American laws pertaining to married legal rights do not *account* for that and that's why America forced Utah (and hence, indirectly the LDS Church) to disavow polygamy before admitting Utah to the union. It's really pretty simple if you think about it.

I do not agree with same sex marriage, because it if marriage is to get the perks of marriage, it defeats the purpose.
For polygamy, if all the parties are willing parties and there is not a single brainwashing or intimidation thing going on, I see no reason to oppose it.
Now, why are Christians so disgusted with the idea that god is imaginary? The answers are the same, it is against their beliefs.

I wonder the same thing. I don't agree with either one but
I wonder about the logic of some of the previous answerers- for the one that said polygamy was illegal, so was homosexual activity and as far as I know, most of the laws dealing with this behavior are still on the books- so illegal does not hold water- you either agree with the activity or you don't and you have good solid reasons for it or you are just biased. As for the slavery comment- I don't see how that is much different (except they committed their lives to each other) than a guy or girl sleeping around with multiple partners and are not married or people with "open marriages"
I am amazed at the double standard and the lack of logic and morality when when agrees with homosexual and premiscuous, adulterous behavior but has a huge problem with polygamy- make up your minds people- it is either all wrong or anything goes- same goes for peoples ideas about sexual behavior with animals- I don't understand how one can defend homosexuality to the death but get all grossed out or offended at the thought of people who think it is perfectly natural to have relations with animals - and PLEASE don't dare any evolutionists tell me it is different!!
All of it is sexual immorality, unnatural and an abomination- unhealthy physically, emotionally and spiritually for the participants.

Marriage is between two people not 5 or 8. Why should gay people be excluded from marriage only because of who they sleep with? Polygamists had a choice and they chose polygamy. Besides, civil unions are the as marriages so if we give civil unions to gay people like many who oppose gay marriage support, what is stopping polygamists from getting civil unions? Then, by your logic homosexuals shouldn't be allowed to get any type of recognition because polygamists might follow. Polygamists are mostly abusive and they feed off the welfare state like many sects do in Utah. Gay people suppor themselves and they're only asking what is their right.

it's not the same thing. Same sex marriage is still one to one partnership. Some don't care who you love, they just don't want you sharing it with more than one person.
But I think if you know what you are getting into...go on ahead with the multiples. It would get tricky as far as like...insurance policies and wills though at the end. Maybe you might adopt the 4 wives things and then the rest just be...uh what's the term? concubines?

My guess why people have a problem with either of them is it's not 1. excepted by society; it's not the norm. 2 and it makes them uncomfortable.
Whether there right or wrong; that's between them and God. Not me and them.

Hey you want to be married to somebody who already had 9 wives, be my guest. I feel the same about it as I do the homosexual marriage. I am not gay but hey if they want to get married go ahead. The only marriage I care about is my own.
