I have travelled a lot, and I've been very nervous in the past. So I understand. And I think that fear of the unknown never really goes away. To a huge degree I've overcome my fears. You have to understand how many flights happen all over the world every day, day in day out. The news media will always report an accident, and think about it - for the numbers of flights that happen every day, we sure don't hear about accidents very often.

Rather than reassure you about the machinery of the planes, which lots of other people on Answers will know more about than me, I want you to think about big business. Air travel is a huge industry, involving billions and billions of dollars. If there's an accident, it will be hugely damaging to the airline involved, not only in terms of being sued by people involved, but also in the damage to the airline's reputation, and to their business. When there's this much money involved, airlines will leave no stone unturned to make sure everything goes well. Money speaks louder than anything.

There are very important people who fly all over the world. World leaders, royalty - nobody is going to do anything risky. If flying was unsafe, these guys would be travelling by ship.

Pilots are trained for every eventuality. And their training is ongoing. Every few weeks they take time out to do simulator work. They practise flying in the most crazy awful scenarios. That's why they stay so calm all the time, because they've done it all before.

Flying is routine. Training is meticulous. It might help you to take a look at air traffic control websites, like LAX - you can actually see just how many planes are landing and taking off every minute of every day. And that is happening all over the world, all of the time. How many car accidents happen in the world in the course of 24 hours? And yet strangely we don't think twice about getting in a car.

It's said that the most dangerous aspect of flying is driving to the airport.

Nothing in life is guaranteed safe, even staying at home.

i have my private pilots lisc and both my step dad and uncle are former airline pilots, trust me commercial flying is very very safe. think of it this way, if it weren't how could they find people to work on them? cant imagine there are that many people with a death wish so they must feel they are safe in those planes.there is no need to be terrified of planes, airline food on the other hand, that is something to be terrified of. lol

I work for the Fresno Yosemite International Airpport and planes are extremly safe to fly in. we do so many aircraft checks, runway checks, and passenger checks the likelyhood of something happening are so small and if something does happen its usually something small like landing gear stuck out and the plane will turn around or land at the nearest airport untill the problem is fix and the plane is completly safe to take off. you have no worries you have thousands of people working to ensure your safty while your in the air. :)

DONT BE TERRIFIED. I KNOW ITS EASY FOR ME TO SAY, BUT THEY ARE PERFECTLY SAFE. I WAS TERRIFIED THE FIRST TIME I FLEW, I CRIED ALL THE WAY TO THE AIRPORT. TRUE STORY. NOW, I LOVE IT. PLANES ARE ALOT SAFER THAN CARS, BELIEVE ME.
