Depends on what you consider to be 'damage'. To some whack-jobs simply breathing and occupying space on earth is damage. And to other whack-jobs nothing harmful comes out of a tailpipe or smoke stack.

In truth, just about everything we do has some adverse affect on the environment. But we are entitled exploit the Earth's resources to to meet our needs (as is every creature in existence) The key is to do it is a sustainable way that does not ruin things for the next generation. Because of economic pressures, there is a lot of unsustainable exploitation going on. Oceans are over-fished, rain forests are slashed and burned, our western rivers are dammed up and sucked dry, mountain tops are removed to get at coal, we are running out of oil, but continue to drive 15mpg SUVs when we can be driving 60mpg cars.

It's all a balance, and right now the balance is for the here and now and not the future.
