So I work for a major internet retailer doing customer service. 99% of my day is spent trying to be extra nice to people that haven't got a clue. They don't read things, they skip through pages and then get mad at us. People are so utterly selfish and self centered it's unbelievable. They all want something for free even if the company didn't do anything wrong the individual just didn't read directions or pay attention. There was actually someone that called in mad that an item was shipped and didn't arrive on time because a ups train derailed. She didn't care if people were killed she was just upset that her $10 item wasnt going to arrive on time and she actually wanted to file a complaint with UPS. Does anyone else have a job dealing with some really ridiculous people in the general public and if so does it make you feel embarrassed that people in your own country are that selfish?

I can relate because I used to work for a cell phone company in their customer care center. After awhile you wonder why you should have to deal with such nasty people. I had one guy call and cuss me out because his cell phone did not work in an area. Guess what? We weren't even his cell phone provider and I got an ear full about what a stupid (insert expletive) I was etc. I even had one guy rail on about how he was a member of the greatest generation and how much life had gone down the tubes since WWII. Yes, I know and I can not help that the company uses a call menu before you get to a real person. Then there was the assumption that since I worked for a call center that I must be some mental defective. Wow, you know a lot of us worked there to put ourselves through college. I was glad to leave that job because I realized that sometimes the members of the general public are adept at whining like petulant children and are exceedingly self-centered. I think I was more embarrassed when men tried to call 1-900 numbers from their cell phones (900 numbers were blocked) and the men were routed to the cell phone call center instead. Yeah, that was really interesting.

It's life. People can be selfish, it's true. But you can try to have a positive effect on these customers and try to diffuse them. It's not always easy. Also, you don't know what has happened in their life recently. They may have been diagnosed with cancer or lost a job or one of a million other things. I realize it must be draining to deal with this day-in and day-out.

I quit working jobs that exposed me to the general public. I either wanted to arrest them for felony stupidity, or beat them about the head and neck, so it was best I retired from public service. People in general disgust me with their poor manners and rudeness. I am raising my kids to say "please, thank you , and excuse me" It gets you alot further along in life, but most of the cretins out there have forgotten that.

I'm in the same boat. And don't forget about the dirty lies people tell just to get a 5% discount. They seem to think they are privileged, and we should bow to them. I think they forget that people behind the counters are people too.
