Yes, all other developed nations are evolving out of their religious ties in their government and the control that these religions hold. We are evolving backwards, and it's because all the crazy fundamentalists and evangelicals trying to force their religion on law and government. Scary indeed.

Has anyone looked around to see how slowly our government changes? I don't think that anything could possibly change this government into a theocracy. I am a religious man, and I gasp at the idea of the US becoming any form of theocracy. For starters, I don't want the state mandating what anyone should or shouldn't believe, read, think or preach. There's too much of that already. Anyway, I can't imagine with the 'political correctness' movement in full swing, that any one religious group could ever take that much power.

By the way, we don't have a democracy, as some postings have claimed. We have a federal republic, where our votes count only towards the people who vote for us (the electors). If we were a true democracy, then we'd have quite a few different presidents (Bush isn't the only one who didn't get a majority of the popular vote), not to mention a troop withdrawal that would have started about three months after our troops were deployed to Iraq.

There's way too many level-headed people who'd be voting 25 years from now to let such an atrocity happen. We have always been strong in the US because of our diversity, and I think that this will continue in the future. Most religious people (christian or not) would stand up against the religious fanatics (christian or not) and ensure that life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness would not vanish from the face of this Earth.

Anyone who seriously worries that in 25 years from now the USA could be a theocracy pretty much removes themselves from the category of rational, by so doing.

I was just thinking this morning that as Islam becomes stronger and more political in Europe and Christianity does the same in the US we are headed for trouble in a big way. It seems that the whole planet is headed toward theocracy and a showdown is inevitable. The founding fathers of the US had good reasons to separate church and state.

Not at all. Well, at least not a Christian based theocracy. Intelligent Christians realize that a theocracy is in our worst interest when it comes to religious freedom. The main question would be, which denomination would be in control of that theocracy, and no matter which denomination it is the others would find themselves in the same boat as the atheist's and non-christian religions.

Ultimately I believe that we the American people, regardless of our faith (and yes, I even see atheism as a faith) are too smart to allow any form of theocracy.

That being said I have no problem with political leaders having and practicing a faith, or not having or practicing one.

No! Even millions of Christians believe in freedom of speech and freedom of religion. I worry that religious nuts from Iran will transport nukes to hammas cells(which we know already exist in USA) and set of a global responses from America. No matter what any liberal anti war guy thinks the person on defense is always at a strategic disadvantage.

I always worry that it'll be a theocracy. As soon as a major religious figure gains power, I'm moving to Spain.

I'm afraid it might be one after the next election. It is danged close to being one now, but my witchcraft books are not being burned yet, so I know it is not 100% yet.

This whole Alberto Gonzales things was an attempt to back door in republican christians into all the attorney general positions in the US, but they got caught before they could get it all done.

No, I don't worry. There will always be rational people to counteract forces such as that. In 25 years from now, the stuff people think is liberal today will be the new conservative.
