The phrase "born again" literally means "born from above." New birth, being born again, is an act of God whereby eternal life is imparted to the person who believes (2 Corinthians 5:17; Titus 3:5; 1 Peter 1:3; 1 John 2:29; 3:9; 4:7; 5:1-4, 18). John 1:12,13 indicates that "born again" also carries the idea "to become children of God" through trust in the name of Jesus Christ.

The question logically comes, "Why does a person need to be born again?" The Apostle Paul in Ephesians 2:1 says, "And you He made alive, who were dead in trespasses and sins..." To the Romans in Romans 3:23, the Apostle wrote, "For all have sinned and come short of the glory of God." So, a person needs to be born again in order to have their sins forgiven and have a relationship with God.

How does that come to be? Ephesians 2:8,9 states, "For by grace you have been saved through faith, and that not of yourselves; it is the gift of God, not of works lest any man should boast." When one is "saved," he/she has been born again, spiritually renewed, and is now a child of God by right of new birth. Trusting in Jesus Christ, the One who paid the penalty of sin when He died on the cross, is what it means to be "born again" spiritually. "Therefore, if any man be in Christ, he is a new creation..." (2 Corinthians 5:17a).

We are born physically, but we also need to be born spiritually. When Jesus said, "You must be born again" (John 3:3) He meant we must have a spiritual birth. Spiritual birth occurs when a sinner repents (turns away from), of his sins and surrenders(wants nothing more than to obey) his life to Jesus Christ and confesses that Christ is Lord and Savior. A "Born Again Christian" is a new creation, with the indwelling Holy Spirit empowering the believer to live the Christian life.

As far as I know, that comes from these 2 verses:

1 Peter 1
22Now that you have purified yourselves by obeying the truth so that you have sincere love for your brothers, love one another deeply, from the heart. 23For you have been born again, not of perishable seed, but of imperishable, through the living and enduring word of God.

John 3
5Jesus answered, "I tell you the truth, no one can enter the kingdom of God unless he is born of water and the Spirit. 6Flesh gives birth to flesh, but the Spirit[b] gives birth to spirit. 7You should not be surprised at my saying, 'You[c] must be born again.' 8The wind blows wherever it pleases. You hear its sound, but you cannot tell where it comes from or where it is going. So it is with everyone born of the Spirit."

It is a spiritual birth rather than a physical birth.

Those who are born again have received salvation through Jesus Christ and follow Him.

I believe this is the most important promise given to Christians when they believe in Jesus and His death and resurrection. We are "new creatures, born of the spirit". We no longer have to sin, we have a new nature. This is the reason why Paul preached that we are no longer under the law. "the law is for the lawless" It really bothers me when preachers and teachers tell believers we are still under the law; this is a denial of the gospel.

You are a spiritually dead person until you become alive in Christ. Therefore you are born from your mother's womb into this world, spiritually dead. When you accept Christ, you are born-again, in the spirit into God's Kingdom.

making the decision to 'die' to sin, repent of the sins you have, and have 'new birth' in Christ.

death refers to not adhering to, turning away from, no longer being a slave to or child of sin.

rebirth refers to adhering to God's Word, looking towards, coming into a relationship with and being the child of God.
