My Samsung burner with Nero included a User's Guide. It instrcted that in order to use a CD like a floppy, you would have to use CD/RWs and they would have to be formatted with Nero.

I backed up this way until flashdrives became available. They have come way down in price, are easier to use, and hold much more data.

windows says the disc isn't writeable ? or it fails to show a disc in the drive at all.
Have you tried another disc? Is it clean (no scratches, cat hairs, etc.)
Sometimes when this happens to me, I restart the computer and put in a different disc.
