i accidently saved over the file i want. is there a way to recover it if i've already closed and reopend word

If you did not opt to have backup copies made and you know you overwrote the file, it is gone.

In Word, in Tools, Options, Save, I have chosen to "always make a backup copy." This way if you accidentally delete a file or overwrite it, you can open the backup and save it to a new name. When you "refresh" the list of files, the backups all gather at the top of the list where they are easily deleted. They do come in handy at times.
