I like to watch military movies and read books so heres my list: Black Hawk Down- great movie, In the Company of Heroes- book by Michael J. Durant who was a helicopter pilot during Somolia crisis time frame who was featured in Black Hawk Down and was taken as a POW. I also like We Were Soldiers, and Saving Private Ryan. Full Metal Jacket was ok, but I don't think its the best war movie ever made, and honestly everyone usually just watches the opening scene where the guy go beserkers.

I personally stand by "Saving Private Ryan" as the best war film ever. The meticulous care that went into shooting this film is undeniable. When I saw it with my cousin, I recall a veterans group that came in. These guys wore the hats and had pins on their lapels. Tow of them were in wheel chairs. The D-Day scene without the music was a heavy stretch of film to watch. When all went silent after the first twenty or thrity minutes, all I heard was the sound of weeping from the old men seated behind me who were obviously soldiers in that conflict.

My experience of this film was certainly unique, but I get choked up everythime I watch it. Regardless, the grittiness, the blood, the sweat, the tears from this film made it seem real, if not for me - since I never served in combat - at least for those men who sat behind me.

Apocalypxe Now, Saving Private Ryan, Platoon, Full Metal Jacket, all good. Not really a movie, but I loved the series "Band of Brothers" on HBO. One of the best war "movies" I've ever seen.

As a former Marine, I thought FMJ was a great movie, BUT Saving Private Ryan is probably the best movie ever made, regardless of genre. Dirty Dozen, Kellys Hero's and Midway are some of my other favorites

It is very close to the best, for sure. The only knock against it is that that it is really two movies - a basic training movie and then a field battle movie. Both are fantastic (I'd give my nod to the basic training part as being some of the most compelling 45 minutes of movie ever), but the fact that the story is so segmented probably knocks it down a few notches.

No, But R Lee Ermey was outstanding as the DI. My favorite and this is just my opinion is All Quiet on the Western Front(1930 or 31). It was two movies a war movie and anti war movie in one. I am also a great fan of The Best Years of our Lives(1946)

I am surprised nobody has mentioned some of the best.
Twelve O'clock High
Battleground
A Walk in the Sun
The Man Who Never Was
That is all I can come up with off the top of my head, but there are more.
For a TV series the absolute best is Victory at Sea.

I don't find it to be the best, but I think the scenes with the VC Sniper in Hue are fascinating. It makes no difference that they are US troops tormented by a hidden sniper. That same scenario has plagued soldiers of every nation. And the frustration the troops experience as they lose man after man to the sniper is spot on. I do believe that scene captures the essence of armed conflict.

The war part of that movie was actually pretty bad when you compare it to in depth and gritty movies like Platoon and Hamburger Hill. I think the genius of this movie is it's portrayal of Marine Boot Camp.
