I have herniated three discs in the past five years, so know what back pain is. I have found the mattress makes no difference - normal mattress, air mattress, therm-putic, etc. What helps me is the position I sleep in. By pure accident, I found I get my best sleep when sleeping in a recliner. I have now progressed to an adjustible bed, which inclines both my back and my feet. Also, if you have a soaking bath or jacuzzi, use that with as warm / hot water as you can stand and some Epsom salts.
