i want to go with my friends to the catholic church for the first time............
but since i am black, i am scared i will be the only black person in the entire church
protestant churches are divided..........whites and whites, blacks and blacks, hispanics and hispanics..........
are they the same with catholics? whites and whites, blacks and blacks? will people stare at me - including the priests - because of the color of my skin? is there even such a thing as a black catholic?

Of course there are black Catholics. Africa is one of the places in which in the Catholic is making great inroads with the people.

It sounds to me as if you are concerned the Catholic Church segregates it's masses, so whites worship only with other whites, blacks worship only with other blacks, and so on.

I can assure you, this is not the case in the Catholic Church. All those who wish to worship God as Catholics, are right to do so together as one Body.

No matter your skin color, or that of the rest of the congregation, you are welcome to attend Catholic Mass.

The Church believes everyone possesses dignity as a human being, and should be treated with dignity regardless of skin color.

Anyone who acts in a racist manner, while claiming to be a Catholic, needs to learn a things or two more about their Church's Doctrine.

God accepts you regardless of your skin color. Therefore, there is no reason to believe those who are honestly trying to live a Christ-like like won't also accept you.

One of the elements of the mass is called the Kiss of Peace; where you take a moment and wish well those around. This consists mostly of a quick shake of the hand and a "Peace be with you." I think you will be pleasantly surprised at how welcoming the average Catholic is.

As the other posters have said, you have no reason to fear going to Mass. There are Catholic churches on every continent and in every country on the earth, and there are people of every possible background at nearly every church every weekend. There are black priests, bishops, deacons, monks and nuns. Color of skin isn't important. What's important is that you come to Mass. Oh, and if anyone does look at you funny, you should report them immediately following the Mass to the priest, so that he can put an end to it. There is no room in the Catholic church for racism. I hope this helps to calm your fears. If you would like to talk about any other questions or concerns, please feel free to e-mail me privately: kbviolin_98@yahoo.com

Catholic parishes are as mixed as the neighborhoods in which they reside.

We sometimes split based on language but not on race.

The 270 million Catholics of African descent represent about 25% of the one billion Roman Catholics throughout the world in more than 59 countries.

Most Black Catholics are in Africa.

However there are about 3 million in the United States.

No, we have a mixed congregation. There is no racism in the Catholic Church. If somebody acts in a racist way to you he should be ignored or reported to the parish office.

Peace and blessings!

Oh God no! You have nothing to worry about! They separate you by race in the protestant church?

Sweety, you are fully welcome in God's home. Sit where you like, pray as you like, and just enjoy your time with God. You have NOTHING to worry about. I go to Mass with black catholics all the time, and I'm white. One of our main ushers is Mexican and can't speak English that well but it doesn't matter. He loves the Church, and I love him.

Go to Mass anytime. Sit where you like, enjoy your time with Him.

Welcome home.
