I want to change the spark plugs on my 2004 Ford Focus. The problem is, it's the California emissed 2.3 Liter vice the US 2.0 liter. I have the Chilton's, but that is primarily for the 2.0 and ZTec motors. The manual specifically says the 2.3 liter does not have spark plug wires, but speaks of removing them another way - I am pretty good mechanically, but I cannot understand how to do this procedure.

You are correct that your engine has no spark plug wires. Instead you have four COPs (coil-on-plugs). Simply disconnect the electrical connector and remove each 7mm bolt securing each COP to the engine for access to the spark plugs. Be sure to use only the proper Ford/Motorcraft plugs gapped to the factory spec of 0.049" to 0.053" (1.25 to 1.35mm) for the best results. Hope this helps.

did not say what 3 hundred and sixty 5 days 5.4 and what form engine... The others gave a sturdy ides for the older form, although the hot 5.4 3valve are incredibly elementary as they're nevertheless less than the coil packs (you should eliminate the coil packs in my view to get on the plug) yet makes use of a smaller 9/16 inch socket to modify the plugs... also those plugs are familiar for breaking contained in the top so liberal use of wd-40 and staying power to eliminate the former plugs and torque the hot ones to twenty-5 LB-feet

stick with what ford girl said but I am adding additional reccomendations apply dialectric grease to the inner side of the coil on plug boot (cop) also use antiseaze on the spark plug threads only.while your there its a good idea to do your fuel and air filters as well.

Not the type of thing you should do with a new car. Please take it to your local ford dealer. Most spark plugs on newer cars should be replaced every 100k miles. There is more to this than you think.
