I can't remember any details of my life from before I was about 11. Is that a sign of a medical problem? And I'm just scared and upset that I don't remember. The only way I know things that happened in my life during that time is if some one whos was there tells me what happened? Is this normal? Will it possibly come back to me when I'm older? I'm just really freaking out about that. I've only noticed this recently when I reminisced with some of my childhood friends and I could barely remember anything.

Recently I've been having migranes. I've never had that before. The weird thing is that when I turned 11 was the best time of my life. That was one of the best years of my life. Previously to that I did have a lot of problems with being made fun of in school, but nothing so bad that it would be traumatic. I don't think the headaches/migranes have anything to do with it, because I need a new glasses perscription and that gives me headaches like this untill I get a new perscription.

Sure, that can happen. Sometimes seemingly insignificant things can trigger a memory to pop to the surface. For example, a parent watching their young child at play may suddenly experience a "flashback" to an event that happened when the parent was the same age as their own child. It doesn't have to be about traumas. However, memories of little emotional significance for that individual may have never been stored in the first place. Just because something happens in a person's life doesn't mean it's automatically stored in long-term memory. So as a counselor, I would not find it particularly distressing that your memories before the age of 5 or so are sketchy, especially since you stated your childhood was a stable, happy one. If you had no memories prior to the age of 15-16, then we would be talking probably trauma, even if you continued to insist that your childhood was a happy one.

It sounds like you might have had a rough childhood? If that is true you may have blocked out the memories, if not then be careful of people that might make you think you remember something but they are false memories.

I'd also like to ask if you suffer from chronic headaches and migraines. It could be that you have long term memory problems and perhaps an accident occured when you were a child.

I feel the same way..I had a brain Injury" but even before this" I can't remember" there are some things..little events" thats all..really think I have repressed them" for some odd reason" did some event happen that was so tragic you want to, or need to forget that badly" so you just shut one part of your life down" my cousin is my memory" she helps me remember things. Do you have anyone who was close to you then..who can tell you story's? I am so glad I am not the only one. All I can say..it was an event that happened to you ..and you repressed a part of your life..as it goes with me. I talked to a neurophyscologist..he agreed. Im sorry. I hope you remember what it was..and it was not too painful as mine. I only remember being about 11 also.

Something traumatic could have happened to you at 11 years old, and you just blocked out everything that happened then, and up until then.

It's called retroactive amnesia.

Maybe there was an accident, or you fell...

Talk to people who you were close to and try to find out what may have happened.

Thankfully, if something did happen, it was at age 11. Imagine because 40 years old, bumping your head, and forgetting your Sweet 16, High school graduation, first day of college, your wedding, seeing your child for the first time.

on the seriuos side traumatic events can concrete those doors in your mind closed. my step father molested me at a young age and i had no conscious memories of child hood until the effects of all that led to drugs and alcohol and the later therapy and some ,rehabs, lol, it's ok i can laugh about it today. but seriously, hypnotherapy can help or just seeing a therapist becausae usually if it's not a conscious thing it's probably buried deep in the back.....

if u had a rough childhood you may have blocked it even if you didn't mean to.

if you have other medical problems you should talk to a doctor.

but don't freak to much it could be nothing!
