Skip the Smart Car. As a college student you'll probably do your fair share of moving, and the Smart Car is seriously lacking in cargo space.

I think the Yaris is rather ugly. Toyota has a habit of introducing and abandoning small cars (Paseo, Echo, etc) so who knows if the Yaris will even exist 5 years down the road.

I would go for the Fit. Small, fun car with a lot of useable space, and in 5 years, after you've graduated from college and moved into the professional world, you'll probably want to get rid of it anyway, and Honda's retain their value pretty well, so you shouldn't take too big a hit on the trade-in.

New model American cars are on par with Japanese cars (says independent sources).

But if you want foreign, I'd probably go with the Mazda3 instead. In the hatchback, you'll need the space for all the college stuff. Nothing is worse than packing up the dorm only to realize you ran out of space in the car.
