On 2002 to 2005 model year Explorers, you drain and fill your transmission from a two stage drain/fill plug on the bottom of the transmission pan. On 2001 and older model years, you drain it by removing the transmission pan bolts, and removing the pan itself. This can be a very messy and difficult job on these model years, due to the catalytic converters being routed underneath the pan.

First look it up on yahoo answers. Read everything available. Make the decision to either a) do it yourself or b) pay someone else. Ha. There you have it.

automatic trans pan has no drain plug. you must remove the pan, over a large enough recepticle to catch the spills then clean the gasket surfaces. then replace the filter and pan gasket, then reinstall the pan. note some newer models have a reuseable pan gasket [they are nice and do not leak and are worth the money to install on older tranny's however they must be purchased from your ford dealer] note on late models you will need special filling equipment or you will probably waste as much new fluid as you actually use. good luck and do this in a very clean environment as even a few small specs of dirt can ruin the job.[don't do this outside on the ground.]

If its a 2004 or newer I would highly reccomend not attempting servicing it unless it has a fill tube verify it has a fill tube before messing with the tranny if it does not have a fill tube I would take it to a ford dealer only unless you have a pump, some hose a special fitting that goes on the inner portion of the drain plug.its gonna be a complicated mess unless you have the correct tools and preferably a lift.

only ways to do that is either go to a garage and get a t-tech, which can be pretty pricey. put a hose down the tranny dipstick and suck it out, but that wont get everything, or drop the pan. but if you drop the pan watch out cause if you put it back on even a bit wrong, it will leak. so make sure you put a new gasket around it, clean it out good, and make sure that you get the entire old gasket off before you put the new 1 on.

The 2006 has a sealed system. There is no way to check the fluid. This kind of work needs a trans shop.

LET FORD DO IT. IF THEY MESS UP THEY HAVE TO FIX IT.
