I use a fish finder with a cork and 5oz lead. how long should my leader be, it's pretty tight right now. I catch some dogfish so I think I'm not getting off the floor enough.

Brandons right, "lure-fishing" for Blues is very productive, (although, "cutbait" does work).

Try 1/2 OZ Silver/Black Rattle Traps,(or Chartruese/Silver). A fast "stop & go" retrieve works best for me. Try spraying your lures with "Pogey/Menhaden" spray to make them more "tasty" to the Blues,(it also leaves a scent trail). You can purchase this spray at most Walmarts.

Spoons are good too & you can make them more enticing by adding a mullet/pogey strip as a "trailer". I'm partial to the Johnson/Rapala Spoons.

If you aren't getting "hits" right away it may be your line diameter. Downsize to 10-12 LB or use "Spider Line". Get the "Low-viz" wire leader's. Blues have HUGE eyes, (they feed by "motion"), so you can "spook" them with heavy leaders & lines.

Good luck
& catch some fish! Make some Smoked Bluefish Dip for me!

I use a siver spoon or a topwater lure like a mirror lure. Blue fish will attack anything when they are schooling and silver is a favorite color of mine. I have never bait fished for them .

bluefish like to school so........bait fishing will bring in all that you don't want..........have at least a 10 foot casting rod (12 foot prefered) and use 15 lb test, use the south bend invisa-leader(walmart), and start tossing red/white topwaters or siver spoons, don't be afraid to wade in and get wet , so you have the most distance............

I agree with the lures,a good heavy chrome spoon that you can cast well and retrieve fairly fast works wonders

agree ...start with your lines...
relook at your bait presentation
use fluorocarbon leaders...
red color seems to work well
