I didn't read it but I saw the Broadway Musical version.
Dante told Larry King he didn't approve of the liberties the guys that adapted it to Broadway took.

The Commedia is one of the most beautiful pieces of literature and the ultimate EMPEROR of Italian prose. The Inferno is a truly spectacular, breathtaking view of Hell, and a unique perspective still unrivaled in modern literature. The only drawback is the fact that Dante uses real historical figures from 1300's Italy that I wasn't familiar with...but otherwise, the description of Judas getting his back ripped off by the Devil was truly horrifying, and remains foremost in my mind as a traumatizing experience. Purgatorio was even better, as he traveled again through another seven spheres, from mild to extreme, from worst to best, and really reflected hope in a way unparalled. Dante was the best! I haven't read Paradiso yet, (due to its lack of gore), but I skimmed it, and it looks just as wonderful. DANTE IS THE F***ING KING!!!

It was interesting to say the least. I didn't really form an opinion, it wasn't one of my favorite things to read.

I think he had a very interesting concept of hell. I actually found it rather disturbing....sort of like the Bible.
