well, unless he is exceptionally tall, he is overweight. But you said he's kinda short. So i'm strongly leaning towards overweight, and there are a few potential reasons for that. Could be a genetic process, could be diabetes, could be good old fashioned overeating. whatever the cause, it's not good.

Have you talked to him about his weight? if it's genetic, or related to a disease process, he needs to see a doctor and get treated. if it's from overeating, he needs to find a way to eat healthy. not a fad diet, not pills, but a healthy, balanced diet. you can eat, and be full, and if it's the right stuff, you will lose weight, and maintain it if you stick to eating healthy. if he shows no concern about it, i would talk to his parents, and enlist their help. at 13, they should still have some control over what he eats, and how much of it, AND if it's a disease process, than they NEED to get him to a doctor, he should probably see a doctor in any case, because over weight is very very very bad for the heart.

find calorie/fitness calculator on the net, enter all your stats and it will tell you how many calories you need a day to maintain, take off 300-400cal off that number and thats how much you need to lose.
eat 5-6 small meals a day (eat every 2-3 hours)
5-8 servings of fruit and veggies a day
8 glasses of water
have complex carbs for breakfast - they give you energy
have lean meat (protein) for dinner - repairs muscle
cardio exercise 4-6 times a week for 30-50min, light weight training
dont consume foods that are made of white flour (white bread, cakes, past etc.), sugar loaded foods (cookies, icecream, candy etc) and nothing fried, oily.
ofcourse you can spoil yourself once in a while with a little treat:)

I'm sure if he's as big as you say, he's noticed. The point is to voice your concerns to him, (not in front of everyone else, like when you're alone), and maybe ask him what kind of sports/activities he enjoys. You could even offer to help him by hanging out/participating and that will make it seem like more fun and less work. He has to know that if he continues down this path that he will have really bad health issues down the road.

*If his family eats really fatty/unhealthy foods perhaps you could suggest just cutting down on his portions. I know sometimes it can't be helped what your parents serve you, but every little bit of cutting back will help*

Yes that's very bad for him. Shame on his parents! Because of his obesity he is predestined for heart attack and disease, stroke, high blood pressure, cancer. And that is only a few of the illnesses that he is at risk for. And he can basically be guaranteed that he will have diabetes which causes many illnesses in itself. Your friend needs to be under doctor's care, eat a healthier diet and live a more active lifestyle and his parents need to be a huge support and staple for this behavior.

You seem to be a good friend. Good luck to you!

First, get him onto Maury and he might get some free things. Next, bring him to a doctor/counselor and have him really straightened out!!

Please encourage your friend to see a Registered Dietitian in the area to prevent further weight gain that could impact his health. He is clinically obese and needs to seek out help.

you should really tell a doctor, and you dont have to let your friend know that you told the doctor. let the doctor request a appointment, and let him take care of the rest.
