Possibly, in a manner of speaking. I think of Purgatory as the boundary between heaven and hell, where man may be either purified or annhilated. In a sense, I think we are living now in heaven...or hell, depending on your point of view. As C.S. Lewis said:

"Earth, I think, will not be found by anyone to be in the end a very distinct place. I think earth, if chosen instead of Heaven, will turn out to have been, all along, only a region in Hell; and earth, if put second to Heaven, to have been from the beginning a part of Heaven itself."

I'm disappointed that you did not add details stating your case for this hypothesis.

As I understand it, purgatory is the place you go when you have already been evaluated and found to be good enough for heaven, but not yet. Still some penance to do. It's a Catholic thing, by the way. Protestants did away with it, as with many other Catholic traditions.

But many people have made a case for the theory that we are currently in hell, or in any case that hell is actually on earth. I remember soldiers coming back from Viet Nam with tee shirts that said, "When I die, I'm going to heaven. I already did my time in hell."

Nope. You only go to purgatory after you die

If you are serious about this question would you mean that "life is almost like hell?" Take religion away and help mankind clean up it's act.
