I have studied the history of Joan of Arc many times, have watched the films, read books, etc and I personally believe that there is legitimate reasoning that she was mentally ill. Some of the factors include especially when she was imprisoned and witnessed the devil coming to speak to her to give her a run-through of what she did and claimed and they made perfect sense.
Try watching The Messenger with Milla Jovovich; that's probably the most accurate way to expose her life.

I wrote this Poem for Joan of Ace
Joan of Ark was born in the village of Domremy
Never knowing one day A Saint in History
5oo hundred years after she was killed
Howver the memory of Joan's strength and a sword she wheeled
To save France from England the battles of war
For peace in her country the only score
The words she heard from the sky From our Lord
Never to be questioned why
Was she crazy?
Or
Was she a Witch?
The words uttered, from only the Rich
To the humble peasants a maiden sent by the Lord above
Her only sin was for her country she loved
Burned at the stakes for being a Witch they say
However a Saint in History that’s what is written today

No one can be sure... But very likely, she made it all up to encourage the French troops. Because they believed that God was fighting for them, the French had stunning victories with Joan of Arc. It is a pretty good possibility. As I say however, no one knows for sure, with what she did- I wouldn’t be very surprised if God was with her.

I say both. True, she was inspired by God, however Joan wanted stick every English with her spear. Sometimes Joan gets caught up in her holy jihad that she forgets herself. She was fill with so much hate because of her sister's murder and rape from english soldiers. Yes they rape her sister after they killed her.

Have you ever heard your deity speak to you??
I'm not saying that she was insane....I'm saying she believed she had a deep connection to her god. Just like Stephen of Ireland who was banished because he thought he could talk to god without a priest (you saw him portrayed very well in the movie braveheart).
