Ever heard of the term "location, location, location?" If you are at the wrong place, time and circumstances (ie a bar, a deserted alleyway, wrong part of town) it is possible that you could be mugged. Raped? What are you a homo? I don't recall in the news that a band of homosexual rapists wander the streets of N.Y. looking for victims. In Lots day (Sodom and Gommorhea) that would have happened but I don't think it is that bad yet. Just use (hopefully you have some) common sense and however you managed to stay out of trouble in your own city, apply the same principles with a litlle more caution. Once you make it through your big fear, of the big name of New York, you might come back for another visit.

I go to NY every year alone and never have a problem! Just stay in areas where there are lots of people around....remember, NY is the city that never sleeps! Also, New Yorkers can spot a tourist a mile away! Don't stand around on the street looking confused or lost. Go into a store if you need directions. Walk down the street with a confident attitude. I have found that New Yorkers are just wonderful. For every one New Yorker who is difficult or has attitude, you will find 100 who are kind and helpful. Have fun!

I was just there with a bunch of friends for 4 days and none of us were assaulted or mugged. I never felt unsafe, whether I was on the subway or on the streets. People were generally nice. Just keep your wits about you. You can also wear a wallet that has a strap that you wear across your chest, under your jacket. It's harder for people to pickpocket you that way. But in general, I wouldn't NOT go to NYC just because of your fears of being mugged. It is so worth seeing.

I don't think you'll get raped but every guy I know had been jumped or mugged at least once. Most of those people have lived here for years though and a lot of it happened in desolate and dangerous areas.
You'll be fine.

I think that story started during the Dinkin's administration when gangs of young gay thugs would chill out during the day in the meat packing district and then come out at night and terrorize male tourists who lost their way in the labyrinth of streets that is the West Village. When Giuliani became mayor one of his top priorities was the eradication of those gangs so thanks to Rudy G. you may be mugged , you may be raped, But all of us New Yorkers can assure you that you will not be raped AND mugged
Enjoy NYC

Now, yes it is safe. If it was 20 years ago you'll have a FAR better chance of getting assaulted.
NYC is the safest big city in america (1,000,000 +)

No city in the world is safe. Its just a matter of being careful like not walking in dark alleys and other security measures that, i assume, someone in your age should know. New York is a nice place to go and getting around is easy, thanks to the subways. Dont let your fear set you back from this adventure. Believe me. Im a Filipina, first time in the U.S., visited relatives in N.Y, with my American husband who has never been to N.Y. and we survived!!! Now, i fly to N.Y. by myself and go around by myself and its fun!!!! Btw, get a map of N.Y. and the subway. Big help. Enjoy!

If you look like a scared rabbit, you WILL mark yourself as a target. It is very possible to go to NYC and NOT be a victim of a crime. However, if you lack the common sense that God gave a dog, please stay home to avoid becoming a statistic.

Just don't act or walk around like a victim. Walk in NYC as though you belong there. If you look weak and helpless, the city would eat you up.
