I was having this debate with my friends. Some say that it is wrong for christians to drink alcohol. Jesus's first miracle was turning water into wine. If it is wrong to drink then why would he do that? I hav taken the position that it is ok to drink everyonce in a while but its not ok to get drunk. What do you guys think?

I think you need to consider whether it is something that has the potential to gain power over you. If you have a personal or family history of alcohol abuse, you place yourself in danger even through moderate usage. The other consideration is how you are influencing others:

"Therefore let us stop passing judgment on one another. Instead, make up your mind not to put any stumbling block or obstacle in your brother's way. As one who is in the Lord Jesus, I am fully convinced that no food[a] is unclean in itself. But if anyone regards something as unclean, then for him it is unclean. If your brother is distressed because of what you eat, you are no longer acting in love. Do not by your eating destroy your brother for whom Christ died. Do not allow what you consider good to be spoken of as evil. For the kingdom of God is not a matter of eating and drinking, but of righteousness, peace and joy in the Holy Spirit, because anyone who serves Christ in this way is pleasing to God and approved by men.
Let us therefore make every effort to do what leads to peace and to mutual edification. Do not destroy the work of God for the sake of food. All food is clean, but it is wrong for a man to eat anything that causes someone else to stumble. It is better not to eat meat or drink wine or to do anything else that will cause your brother to fall.

So whatever you believe about these things keep between yourself and God. Blessed is the man who does not condemn himself by what he approves. But the man who has doubts is condemned if he eats, because his eating is not from faith; and everything that does not come from faith is sin."
Romans 14:13-23

Drinking alcohol is fine but moderation is key. If you're only having it once in a while and so long as you aren't drinking with the intent to get drunk then its fine. Most importantly never under any circumstances should you drive when you've had even a drink or two. You may not fell it but your judgment can and will be slightly impaired. I know a couple of people that have problems for life because someone decided that it was ok to get behind the wheel of a car after having a few.

The scripture speaks clearly against drunkenness. But, even Jesus had wine.

Personally, I do not drink. I made that decision at 13 when my mother died of complications due to alcoholism - that was a year before I accepted Jesus as Lord and Savior. I also know that my drinking would be a "stumbling block" for others and I don't want that.

If a person can have a glass of wine at Christmas dinner, there is nothing wrong with that. If a person has a can of beer at a company picnic, no sin committed. But, they are certainly doing no good when they go to the buzz and beyond.

I would recommend for most Christians not to drink so as to not cause a stumbling block and also not to bring their own temptation for drunkenness to their front door. If you don't drink, no question is raised and no temptation is entertained.

It depends. There are some Christians that consider drinking any alcohol is a sin. The reason why could be that by drinking you will fall into a trap that requires you to drink even more. The more you drink, the more likely you are going to hurt someone including yourself. For example, My brother is a recovering alcoholic. He fell into the trap because he wanted to be cool with his friends. He stopped drinking because he woke up and seen the mess his drinking was causing.

Hey man the Bible tells us not to partake of strong drink (aka) alcohol. Before you go running around and quoting scriptures to apease your own selfishness you should remember the scripture where it says that a man rightfully dividing the word of the Lord, and this will help bring wisdom unto you. Try looking the words of your verse about Christ turning water into wine in a Strong's Concordance and you might be surprised or try logging on to bible.com for your answer.

NO! But there will always be SOMEONE who will tell you it is. So it was then, so it is now. There are however two instances where it IS wrong; 1) If you are an alcoholic and you know it, and 2) If you drink in the presence of someone you know to be an alcoholic and cause them to fall off the wagon. You also shouldn't drink to get drunk, but one or two? NO PROBLEM!!!

Wine was most of what they drank because water was unsafe.

Jewish people also do a lot of sacrements with wine.

Jesus and his disciples had 24 ounces of 10% wine at the late supper (3-8 ounce glasses) as the ritual demands.

Hate to be the bearer of bad news...

God must've foreseen all these "moderate drinkers", because he spoke again two centuries ago and commanded sobriety.

As for the alcohol, well, that's merely poison that gradually ruins your liver and brain. Otherwise, it flushes right through you...

The drunkenness, out of which comes impaired judgment and all kinds of evils, is absolutely condemned by God.

So, how do you get drunk?

By drinking.

What, even in moderation?

Yes; you must first begin with moderation.

Along with other sins in moderation, God has forbidden even very mild drunkenness.

It certainly is okay to drink alcohol. It is a gift to be enjoyed and used in moderation and with joy. Even the Bible says "take a little wine for thy stomach". It cleans the blood, aids in digestion, and relaxes people.

Drunkenness is not good.

The bible does not teach not to drink wine but not to get drunk on wine which leads to debauchery. Rather, be filled with the Holy Spirit.
