The best way is to buy a ticket at Zurich Hauptbahnhof (train station). Trains to Lucerne run every half hour with a return ticket costing about 44 swiss francs (2nd class). 1st class is about 75 francs - half those figures for a one way. The trip only takes about 50 minutes, and you end up in one of the prettiest towns in Europe.

Take the train. Don't buy a ticket, hide in the bathroom. You may have to get out in Thalwil or Zug and wait half an hour for the next train, but you have a reasonable chance of making it. (You're allowed to not have a ticket, but you do have to pay for one if the guy comes.)

Well you could hitchhike, but the other cheapest way would
be by train. Easy and cheap.
