Grease behind your legs would help avoid getting taken down, because when they would grab your legs their hands would tend to slide off.

They also check the gloves to make sure they haven't been tampered with. The person putting the gloves on signs the tape along the base so that they can tell if the fighter has messed with the gloves at all.
